Max Gentry reference in 2x22, 4x23 and 5x10 episodes

Regarding reference to Max Gentry. I saw that as a closure to Max story arc for Kensi. She has been twice confounded with Max personality as she sees a Deeks in the Max undercover persona. That is inspite the fact that Deeks asks her not to mistake Max with Deeks. To some extent Kensi is right as she finds Max not so different from Deeks and he too accepts that Max is his alterego. So Kensi had felt weakest in her relationship with Deeks because of Max and her emotions when exposed to all, are laid bare of her feelings for Deeks and yet she is jealous that Max kissed or made love with some other woman. She acts too itchy and hurt about those two times. She wants it bad that Max reveal himself to the two women, so that there never exists anykind of lingering relationship with either Nicole or Monica. Deeks the second time around knows that Kensi might feel this way and is already prepared to have some kind of damage control. It is that same token of care towards Kensi when in Frozen Lake, Deeks matches Max against Fern; essentially importing to Kensi that Max may be the charmer for all women, but he too has been taken by Fern/Kensi. And Kensi, true to her character, would rather be loyal to Deeks and act pricy for Max even when playing Fern. Hence, the words, "its complicated, I have a boyfriend". Its practically a comfortable sphere that Deeks provided to Kensi, not to ever feel insecure that Deeks or Max will not have any romantic interest in Kensi.

Max Gentry was introduced by Dave Kalstein and Joseph C Wilson in Plan B and now Dave Kalstein has provided a closure towards the effect he has on Kensi. Now that their thing is official, Kensi should not feel bad ever for Deeks taking the Max undercover personality. Afterall Kensi too goes for seductive acts when in undercover, as seen in The Watchers of Season 3. The one issue Kensi might still have with Deeks is...him going undercover without her knowledge or anything about him, was not known to her. She has kept track of all Deeks things, inspite of her asserting that she is not interested in him and she does not take surprises with regards to Deeks kindly. Bottomline she is highy possessive about him and even in her anger about him in certain cases will have the deepest care and concern for him and will always feel bad if she did not care enough for him or become reckless if she did not hear about him for long.

5x16 Fish Out of Water

Fish Out of the Water would mean death for the fish. Because it out of its environment. Who is the Fish out of the Water in the episode ?! It was Raul Harrera the Yemeni extremist who when caught as Equadorian could not speak Spanish. Who wants to avenge the death of civilian killing due to US War on Terror.
It also seemed Deeks, who working with the DEA Agent got the taste of nearly being “fish out of water” without Kensi. Out of Job...or without Kensi, its equally being Fish Out of Water for both Deeks and Kensi. The consequences for Deeks or Kensi if they go along with their relationship is what Deeks and Kensi were supposed to talk about at the end of 5x10-The Frozen Lake Episode. And yet they had the misfortune to have the separation instead, which only added more feelings of longing with uncertainty around them than a deterministic approach towards their relationship. That idea of consequences is what Talia is able to provide to Deeks, when she narrates her story of what happened to her partner and beau when they wanted to take it to the next step, how it ended for them. It probably reminds Deeks that same arduous journey he has to take on the Frozen Lake. Would he be able to balance the emotion of passion and duty-call towards Kensi.

One of my favourite writers story it is. Yes, I like Joe Sachs for his sensitive and subtle stories that usually focus on the casualty and human costs of any ideal cause gone wrong. He forces us to see what has been forgotten, overlooked, until someone challenges authorities to look into things what they have missed. They become martyrs in their cause, though misleading and dangerous it is. The dominant emotion of a Joe Sachs episode is Pain, Love and Courage. Its a cathartic process....

Highlights of the Story
  1. The White Ghost has a face. And Kensi did not take the shot. She seemed to be shocked looking at the White Ghost's face. Does she recognize him?
  2. Densi - Its a Love Story is back. Where is Kensi? when Deeks so yearningly wants to talk to her. Anything for the joy she brings him. There is serious turn to the love-story. What will happen to them if they come out with their relationship. Will they be allowed to work together? Deeks seems to have become ready for anything...if he has to leave he will as long as he gets to be with Kensi.
  3. Watch it for the subtle drowning into emotions as presented through all characters. Especially Raul, Talia, Deeks, Kensi and Granger. Raul -What its like to be playing a part that you are not. Talia - What's its like to be working alone and being alone when you could also have the chance at happiness by being with someone and working with someone. Does one have that chance? Is it worth fighting for the cause if it can bring happiness to us, even at the risk of losing it all ?
  4. But perhaps all this fight is matter of survival like the Fish Out of Water. Kensi is Deeks emotional center. What would happen to Deeks if something happens to Kensi or gone? Will he able to survive or fight is what he is left to in order to survive. Just that the means have to be right. Not endangering other innocent lives.
  5. Talia and Deeks working together was like that of Deeks introductory episode and early episodes of Densi. Deeks role is reversed this time and there is Kensi all over in the form of Talia. They are just close. Will Deeks suffer the same fate as that of Talia's partner? Something we cannot help asking.....

More in detail...

Episode
5x16 - Fish Out of the Water
Fish Out of the Water would mean death for the fish. Because it out of its environment. Who is the Fish out of the Water in the episode ?! It was Raul Harrera the Yemeni extremist who when caught as Equadorian could not speak Spanish. It also seemed Deeks, who working with the DEA Agent got the taste of nearly being “fish out of water” without Kensi. Is he ready for the life to leave NCIS if he and Kensi go public with their relationship. It is certain one of them would have to leave…
Fish Out of Water is also a documentary movie. You can read about it more here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_Out_of_Water_(film)
Writer
Joe Sachs - LA Story
R S Gemmill - Afghan Story

Joe Sachs has a history of picking up a movie or documentary that sensitively questions the whys and wherefores of the routines suddenly developing into the catastrophic attention. We can see all his story titles are based on movie or documentary names.  Even Fish Out of Water is documentary movie about “what does Bible have to say about being gay?” In this story, Joe Sachs weaves a story for Densi and Deeks, with the serious side of the “Love Story” coming up for the first time after Frozen Lake. The complication of two working partners falling in love and what implications each can have regards to his or her career is touched upon through the Guest character DEA Agent Talia.

Joe Sachs stories can never be much written about, but there is that poignant pain; which that emotion about feeling the pangs of loss gives us through the subject’s pain and yet there exists a stronger emotion of moral propriety within the subject’s mind, which cannot be snuffed into oblivion or indifference which gives him the spirit and fuel to keep fighting for in order to survive. The lingering feel about the interplay of those emotions of rebellion, disillusionment and retribution; sticks to our mind and our imagination starts to expand it. Take any episode written by Joe Sachs, the stories appeal to us because of the subjects involved could be the disillusioned miscreant fighting for justice in his own way, who make us look deep into matters we otherwise would never pay attention to. We can feel all that, the Sam cannot answer Raul’s statement or the DEA Talia’s pessimism in looking at things as they are.

Episode Summary
An explosion in Fish Company warehouse raises suspicion for NCIS LA Team in order to investigate if it is an isolated act of domestic terrorism or its an act of international terrorism.
An explosion in local Fish Trading company causes the DEA and NCIS LA teams to work together. Talia has been working in undercover for suspected Drug Movement through the Fish containers which come from Equador. The explosion investigation leads the teams to Mateo and Raul, two Islami Yemeni nationals who indulge in terrorist activities. They have been able to slip from authorities through Equadorian Identities created for them. They are traced to Middle East existence through Hetty’s knowledge of the old computer code.
If we watch the episode, we will love the dramatic elements of the story playing themselves out. There is action, but only as much as it is needed. The real issue of Human Costs of War is subtly played.
Afghan Story
Afghan Base Camp: Owen Granger, Booker and Kensi Blye

Granger and Kensi investigate a helicopter crash that could be tied to their ongoing search for the infamous white ghost.
After 6 episodes since 5x10, we finally have seen how the White Ghost looks like. And when Kensi had the chance to take him, she did not take the shot. It seemed to us that Kensi was astonished to see who The White Ghost was. Her disbelief of the sight before her cost her mission. And not only that Kensi continues the “not really” style of reporting to Granger whether she saw The White Ghost or why she did not take the shot. Her answers are evasive and aggressive, suggesting us that we should ring the alarm bells.
This is the 2nd episode where after 5x11-The Iron Curtain Rising, where none of the NCIS LA members are involved in the Afghan story in any capacity. Otherwise, in every other episode, or the other team member has been in touch with each other in mutual information exchange or taking help.
NCIS Personnel Highlights and Bull Pen Fun
Winter is the highlight. Its the Densi halo around the whole episode when not working on the case.
Deeks, the LA boy, never been out of LA, is like counting his every day apart from Kensi and keenly counting it as one day minus the winter that has to end, that separates him from the warmth that Kensi’s sunshine provides to him. Its the mittens, the groundhog day and not even the Fish Dinner can make him leave the Bullpen without first finishing his appointment with Kensi. Unfortunately, all these lovelorn, languishing signs are taken by Callen and Sam as being a Weather Wimp.
Ops Manager
Hetty Lange
Hetty has a Godson who works in DEA. And if that was not enough like watching an episode of Jeopardy on ABC television, we have news that Hetty was instrumental in development of the code for Internet in 1969. Its knowledge for us, I guess to learn when Internet started coming into existence, or what were the earliest forms of monitoring and surveillance softwares. Neric cannot do much, it is Hetty who can help the team run the scan through forgotten techniques in the technically Advanced world but yet used by the terrorists in the Middle East.
Partnership 1-
G Callen & Sam Hanna
Scallen. Banter as well. Sam cannot stop teasing Callen about Joel. And he wants the juicy details of what’s going on in Callen’s love life. Callen refuses to tell him saying it is personal and private. Well...I do have to agree with Callen there. Come on Sam! Leave him alone. Just be happy that Joel keeps you and Michelle all updated about the same.
Callen as usual is the Team Lead. And Sam is our regular Arabic speaker. Let me count how many languages they speak in this episode. Arabic, Spanish and Japanese. And thank God! this time, the NCIS LA Scribe agreed upon letting Sam go without trying to defuse the explosives within 30 seconds. Instead they asked Sam to run or drive out for his life in 30 seconds. Haha!!!
Look at @jacniv ‘s tweet on the explosion end of the episode. Lovely photograph. [Scroll down to Twitter Messages Section]
Partnership -2
Marty Deeks and DEA Agent Talia

NCIS LA and DEA work together for the case. Something of this sort happened in Deeks introductory episode of 1x19-Hand to Hand. Deeks was after the Drug Traffiking and NCIS LA was after Navy Seals murder investigation. Just that roles are reversed. Now Deeks is with NCIS and Talia is the outsider from DEA and someone who is almost like Kensi.
Deeks must have remembered all of it, how his partnership with Kensi began, her competitiveness to beat him at every nook and corner, her agility and intelligence...everything. And finally there is that “complicated” and prefer to work alone attitude, which Deeks probably had already been through when joining NCIS (as informed to us in 3x10-The Debt by his LAPD Boss). He wanted to work alone but Hetty partnered him with Kensi and he had to change his mind. Something that Talia seems to feel to feel the same and yet accepts that perhaps its not all that complicated to work as partners for them, if one day Deeks is out of his job due to his complications with his partner.
Out of Job...or Fish Out of Water - The consequences for Deeks or Kensi if they go along with their relationship is what Deeks and Kensi were supposed to talk about at the end of 5x10-The Frozen Lake Episode.
Ops Room  Partnership
Eric Beale- Tech Operator
Nell Jones - Intelligence Analyst
You should check out Barrett Foa’s tweet with that fluty instrument that he plays as Eric Beale to gather his agents for the case up in Ops room.  [Scroll down to Twitter Messages Section]. Loved Eric’s costume. Like that red color. Nell too looked cute when she is awed by Hetty’s knowledge of old code and her involvement in developing of Internet in early days.
Love Story
Densi - Deeks and Kensi
The parallel story other than working on the case is of course the Love Story that seems to have taken a serious turn for Densi, especially Deeks. Kensi has not been shown to even desire wishing to talk to Deeks from 5x14-The War Cries. She is getting more and more focussed on the mission, perhaps to complete it and return home. On the other end, Deeks is counting days, for the days of separation to end. He is waiting for the winter to end and Spring to Come..."Groundhog saw his shadow....6 weeks to end." He is almost in a languishing state, more than concerned and worried state about her in the last two episodes as noted by Granger and Nate when they partnered him.
The writers stopped showing the viewers all kinds of direct interactions between Densi, though Deeks through his “not really” talk to Granger, friendly chatter with Nate and now a peer to peer respectful and understanding talk with DEA partner Talia; keeps showing us that Densi are in regular touch with each other.
Deeks is still in dark about Kensi’s Classified Mission. I feel that Deeks regular communication with Kensi will definitely let him know about Kensi’s well being. Deeks could always guage Kensi’s non verbal communication. Question is; will Deeks be able to identify between Kensi’s NVC or Kensi’s absence on the other side?….Something to watch out for in the upcoming episodes.

What happened to Kensi there? Why did she not take the shot? Who was that White Ghost? Does Kensi know him? And there goes Kensi off the radar for Deeks and Densi…our dreaded shocker moment for the Densi Love Story!

In crew's terms this is known as 515-112
The Production Crew has different numbers than what later became the air sequence. Season 4 Production Schedule had an extra episode shot which was telecasted as Unwritten Rule 5x05-101 in airing reality. This changed the sequence numbers for all the season 5 episodes either in terms of Season Episode number or actual episode number for show's grand total serial number. Fish Out of Water realistically becomes 516-112 for Viewers.
