Entertaining episode. It was fun and enjoyable. The way Sam, Callen, Deeks along with Nell and Eric, they went about solving the case including disobeying Hetty's command was totally enjoyable. It was like being Hardy Boys or the Investigating sleuths from any of those sleuth fictions. Can I remember my childhood series, Famous Five!!! Nells was out in the field helping the three boys fly a bad man on the private jet for solving the case.
On the serious side, the episode can be best known as the one where Kensi and Deeks are working separately on their cases. Deeks, always the outsider, misses his partner sorely not knowing if he has to work alone or join Callen and Sam's team, wondering if Kensi was sent away because of the mistake he made in last case or because Hetty has lost confidence in their partnership on account of last case where Hetty was hinting at several problems that he has. Deeks states to Hetty that he can go back to LAPD if that can bring back Kensi. Hetty just comments that it was admirable of him to say so and doesn't say anything. Deeks finally decides that he work as he always does, do his part of the work for the team with or without partner...though absence of his partner keeps setting him off into a ramble that is quite showing his pitiful state. On the other side, Kensi, always the admired and loved Agent by her team back home in LA, reports to duty in Afghanistan. She finds herself as the outsider, no one talking to her, no one knowing her assignation to any case and has only Granger to fall back on for a team support. She misses being home and she can't tell what she misses most, her LA office, her team, her partner or her newly officiated Boy Friend Deeks. A little kind talk could do wonders for her, which she cannot find, and yet she gets ready for the job at hand. Both of these lonesome souls find comfort through looking at each other's pictures, trying to be stoic about their separation caused by Kensi's assignment to the classified mission.

5x11 - Iron Curtain Rising
|
Iron Curtain Rising - what is it ? Its the title of the book “Iron Curtain Rising” written by Independent journalist, documentary film-maker Peter Laufer. The book is about fall of Communism in Europe. Peter Laufer was reporting the Fall of Iron Curtain (coined by Winston Churchill for the divide between Western and Eastern Europe during Cold War Era) at the Berlin Wall over CBS Radio. You can read more about it @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Laufer
In this episode it is the story of Romanian crackdown on its war-criminals and hence its interest in catching Anton Zevlos.

Had a good feel about the episode when watching it. Its usually fun with Jordana’s stories and Tony’s Wharmby’s direction. Nevertheless the seriousness also was there. Too bad that Afghanistan story cut short Jordana/Tony Wharmy shots. Having followed through on Twitter for the Iron Curtain Rising production shoots, I see that some edits have taken away scenes for Nell and Deeks.
|
Episode Summary
|
NCIS LA-SetNav is asked to catch the Romanian War Criminal when he gives a slip to FBI task force sent to nab him at a restaurant.
And on the other side of the globe, Kensi and Granger are in Afghanistan and Kensi is briefed of her assignment by Granger to take down White Ghost after the Task force locates him. The White Ghost is suspected of being a Westerner/American helping the Afghans.
|
Entertaining episode. It was nothing mysterious and pretty straight forward case for NCIS LA. The team had to catch the Romanian War Criminal and Human Trafficker Anton Zevlos who was living in United States as John Vasile. Only what they do not expect is the Romanian proving to be too much than what Scallen can handle. They start alone without needing the second team of Deeks(without Kensi), but soon realize they could use some help from the other teams. But before they can execute the plan, SETNAV removes them from the case, Hetty asks to abort the mission. And yet our team will not keep quiet. They are even helped by Nell. And in a covert mission, they nab the CIA Agent Donald Banks; who had helped Zevlos flee Romania, settle down in USA. Through him they get to nab Zevlos and his lawyer-Girl friend Carla Shear. The fun elements were there. Callen, Sam and Deeks get to fly an aircraft. They looked cute as Pilots and Cabin Crew.
And in Afghanistan, Kensi checks in with her team, where she is instructed by Granger, that she is not in Afghanistan as far as paper records show. She is as much as the Ghost as White Ghost that she is to take down. |
NCIS Personnel Highlights
|
The first episode after Kensi is reassigned to the Classified Mission in Afghanistan.
|
Deeks does look lost in the team and in the Office. And so does Kensi looking lost in strange place with no one as her friend. But they are getting settled into working alone without a partner. Sam starts taking care of Deeks. And back in Afghanistan, Granger is his own is taking care of Kensi.

Ops Manager

Hetty Lange
|
Hetty and her Robotics. Its her new age technology called Advanced Telepresence that allows her to be at three places at the same time. Its a robot with Telescreen showing Hetty's face.
It was fun watching her harass her three Agents. And the bigs boys figured out to escape her telepresence, but her Third Mouse is not escaping her. You are wondering about the mouse...well Hetty is calling Deeks as the Third Mouse hiding from her. Together the three disobeyed her orders. And I wonder why Hetty called Deeks to office when she knew Nell and Eric were not providing any info to Deeks about Kensi and neither she was going to. What was that? Just to have Deeks ramble on... |
Bull Pen Partnership -1
|
G Callen & Sam Hanna
|
Callen sleeping. Expected. And Sam called him a cat for that. LOL!!! They were so like couple in love, married for long. And what was that fighting like a married couple again - who saved the other most ??? Are they school buddies or are they really a couple. God! their Bromance is so lovely to watch. We just flow smoothly into watching them. Sam has soft heart for Deeks and would have taken Deeks along but...its Challenger and they cannot take him. Plus they do not need him. They have just each other. Same happens in the cock-pit and same when they escape from Hetty’s ** and get caught by Hetty in armoury. Come on Boys!!! Damn right that Michele Hanna called them once “Hardy Boys”
On seriousness side, while working on the case, they almost get caught in the explosion. And Callen does not take it kindly that Zevlos shot two men and hurt two kids. That is reason enough for him to disobey Hetty’s command to abort the case.

Bull Pen Partnership -2

Marty Deeks
|
Feeling Lost without his partner and no one to talk to in particular. Only friend seems to be Sam and Hetty. He tried butting in between the wonder twins, but doesn’t get any chance with them as Hetty on that New Age Surveillance is right behind him. Feeling responsible and concerned for Kensi and trying to strike a deal with Hetty...He can leave NCIS and go back to LAPD, if sending Kensi away was a consequence of what Deeks did or what Hetty thinks Deeks and Kensi have done together..(Question Deeks!! What might that be???? What did you do with Kensi ????Can you tell us???? LOL). That was a cute scene. They showed this in this episode. I thought Deeks would blurt this out in last episode and try for a bargain with Hetty. And I wonder what song/music they played when Deeks was looking at those pictures of Kensi.[NCIS LA Magazine presented us with the information here. The music is from Zac Brennan's album. http://www.ncislamagazine.com/ncis-los-angeles-iron-curtain-rising-music/ ]
And what contribution he made towards the case - spotting Donald Banks at the Million Air Charter Office. And what skill-sets he showed in the Boat Shed Interrogation room - he played himself-his lawyer self. Didn’t help him much though, except that Carla Shear stopped acting too smart with her legal knowledge. And what human touch he showed - Carla Shear opened up to him for kind ears on what she had to say - the penitent self of hers for trying to elope with Zevlos, that bit of "wanted to see him for the last time".

Eric Beale- Tech Operator
Nell Jones -Intelligence Analyst
|
Now its turn of Eric and Nell to be given names by Deeks. They are Chestnuts, Wonder twins. Nell is out in the field, helping Callen, Sam and Deeks nab the CIA Agent Donald Banks. She goes undercover as Ground Staff for Million Air.

Kensi Blye & Owen Granger
Rachel Harris (played by Rebecca McFarland) Booker (Andrew Leeds) |
Granger is taking care of Kensi in his own way. How he calls her Miss Congeniality to take her out of her grumpy mood at being the outsider in her new assignment.
Well..we should watch the episode. The costumes and the sets looked fantastic to me. Granger and Kensi with those scarves and the military uniforms, loved it. And the Afghanistan crew, stationed there at that base camp...wow, they have a full team there. No wonder John Peter Kousakis called it a Desert Strategy. You can see the prepping Production pictures over my other post. The Afghanistan Classified Mission about the White Ghost I loved the Set.
That was a wonderful syncing between the two directors for showing Deeks and Kensi looking at the same picture end of the episode. And Kensi, looking at Deeks Laurence of Arabia picture that she was so tired of..and saying Good Night to him before going to Bed...aaww Baby!!

The Production Crew has different numbers than what later became the air sequence. Season 4 Production Schedule had an extra episode shot which was telecasted as Unwritten Rule 5x05-101 in airing reality. This changed the sequence numbers for all the season 5 episodes either in terms of Season Episode number or actual episode number for show's grand total serial number. Iron Curtain Rising realistically became 511-107 for Viewers.
