1x03 Predator

Its Kensi, Eric and Dom who get their due attention after last two episodes. Last two episodes, the stories has Scallen Partership solving the cases. Kensi and Dom just seemed running errands with Eric just doing things that are not even worth mentioning. All that is reversed, they get meatier stuff to play in this episode.
We also have in this episode the insider life of these Agents and Operatives and their challenges of the job that they handle without any complaint except for a bit of sarcasm and small paybacks issued. For them, being an Agent or Operative is not in the least glamerous profile.

Episode
1X03 - Predator
Predator - what is it ? It is a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) used by US Air Force and CIA. Read about UAV technology and Predator here.

Writer
Dave Kalstein
Dave Kalstein in Season One is working the capacity of the Story Editor. That would mean the entire story arc for Season One is known to him. On Individual writer level, Dave Kalstein is a Lover of Martial Arts. He is trained in Blades for Sayoc Kali. Is member of Forge Fighting. He is a violinist also and had been Hollywood Script Writer before joining Shane Brennan’s team for NCIS Los Angeles. He is NCIS LA’s master backstopper for personal stories of its characters. He is the resident expert on Kensi’s character portrayal. He calls her his alter ego.
And true to that, the episode starts with teasing on Kensi’s dating life in Bull pen. And later on we have Kensi going on undercover as Razor Mantis. Dave Kalstein also focuses on Eric Beale in this episode. Other than these two highlights, we have Dom and Kensi’s partnership taking a more serious role in solving the case apart from Scallen partnership.
Director
Tony Wharmby
I liked the attention on how the characters were performing under stress. Each one of them were handling stress and yet doing their job, keeping a check on their emotions while their colleagues were being supportive of each other.
Episode Summary
A US predator control is hijacked by a hacker in a Camp Pendleton joint exercise between Marine Corps and US Air Force. Captain Marks Holden Briggs was operating the Drone and the misfire kills Marine Corp Michael Hazlett.Didn’t like the story much, but nevertheless it exposed the UAV technology’s usage by US military as possible to be taken hostage by computer hackers and what a haywire mess it can be.

The investigation leads from one angle to another angle and ultimately we have the story together. A military Drone(predator-UAV) is hijacked by AJ Concept Solutions owned by Arthur Jansen with the help of his extremist Muslim employee Yusuf Kaleem who sends the vehicle to Jansen’s hide-out location. They were helped by a young hacker Joel Hardy who hacked into US military system and got it for Jansen. However, as he was reckless enough to post the video online, he is killed by Jansen’s brother-in-law Hamzi Khan. The motive is avenging Rifka Khan’s death, who is Rebecca Jansen; sister of Jansen who was married to Hamzi Khan and died in Afghanistan Drone strike. She was a teacher and died along with her 8 students. Jansen and Hamzi Khan plan to strike a High school in LA.

However NCIS LA’s timely detection and through Eric Beale’s hacking skills are able to ask Captain Marks Holden Briggs to take control of the missile (when controlling the Drone fails) to evade the disaster. As that effort ensues, Sam, Callen and Kensi find the yacht from where Janse and Hamzi Khan are controlling the rogue Drone. They take control of the laptop aiding Briggs to control the rogue Drone and have the missile dropped into ocean.

The whole story is about racing against time.

Ops Manager
Hetty Lange
Hetty shows her yet another facet - the feminine side and also that can be deadly side. She supports Kensi’s woes with Dating, that it is not her that is bored and that it is indeed those men who cannot handle independent women who just want to have fun and not be emotionally supportive in motherly fashion to these men. She advises Kensi on the art of seduction as she got it first hand when she was working in Hollywood. She is confused between George Hamilton and Frank Sinatra, as to who might have given her the advice of “What men really love is a woman hard to get.”

The episode starts with her distributing Sexual Harassment Guidelines to her Agents and yet it is Hetty herself who asks Kensi to use her assets (bosom) to catch the hacker and it is Hetty who calls Kensi a “Tootsie” warning her not to damage her crocodile stilettoes that she was wearing for her undercover work.

And other than this Hetty appeared pretty much stressed with damage about the wardrobe, the backstopping arrangement she had to take care of her for Kensi, the Information Intel arrangement she had to provide for Sam and Callen by leveraging her vast network of contacts at right places and finally being teased by Sam and Callen over Nepal thing. She seemed to be running out of peace and poised frame of mind for herself throughout the episode.

These are the lines I liked from Hetty in the episode -
George Hamilton once said to me, “What men really love is a woman hard to get.” or Was it Frank Sinatra ?! - She is upset that she forgot who it was.
When Sam’s shirt is damaged with blood; “Can we bill em ?” “Idiot Hackers” to Eric , “These are crocodile stilettos. You Scruff them tear them and I will end you, Tootsie” to Kensi.

Here is Idiot Hackers Video. The George Hamilton and Tootsie video can be watched in my post on Hetty Videos. It can found on the characters Menu.

Bull Pen Partnership -1
Callen/Sam
Bromance but Sam cannot take Callen’s tease in this episode. Its like Callen is getting on Sam’s nerves and Sam is just about to burst. We get to know that Sam knows Arabic.
Hetty gets a bargain deal for Scallen by leveraging her score with an FBI/DOD/CIA-agent who tells Scallen that Drone exercises at Pendleton were being breached. Later they keep teasing her to tell Nepal story.
Scallen share the solving of the case along with the others, Kensi, Dom, Nate and Eric, who all work in individual capacity to race against time to get back the Drone.
Bull Pen Partnership -2
Kensi/Dom

Its Dave Kalstein and so it beyond doubt that we get a peep into Kensi’s emotions. The episode starts with discussion on her dating life where Kensi declares that she is just first time dater as she is interesting only on the 1st and can never be fun for the second one. See here watch this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaJnLfptw_M
For the case, Kensi is posing as Razor Mantis; the Guest Lecturer to catch the Hacker. RM is an Ex-DOD Hacker and doing lectures instead of jail teaching the subject Perils of Cyber Crime. She paints her lips in red lipstick and looks all seductive, independent and hot to handle to get to the hacker as quick as possible. And all this backstopping is created by her boss Hetty.

Its a funny scene when Kensi prides on herself that she has an IT background in IPSEC Architecture (and yet Jordana Lewis Jaffe made the mistake of forgetting all that for Kensi in Big Brother). She thinks she is quite smart, but Nate cautions her that the hackers have invented all that.

Its another funny scene when Hetty calls her Tootsie about warning her to keep the crocodile stilettoes safe when throughout the day, Hetty has been supporting Kensi for her independent ways. Look on Kensi’s face is cute to watch. Kensi is tired of all the comments on her that she has to deal with while on the job and while playing her undercover character. Towards the end of the episode when Callen teases her, she is frustrated and says, “Hop on Kensi Abuse Train while there is room onboard.”

Dom witnesses death on the job and he is affected that Joel Hardy the hacker got killed and he couldn't do anything. Kensi and Nate ask him not to feel responsible for it. Nate even offers a counselling talk to get him out of his guilt, but stress of the mission remaining unaccomplished makes Dom focus on work at hand and instead work on Captain Briggs to help them out to get back the control on the rogue Drone. Dom’s state of mind can be understood by us as this is his first job and he is just getting exposed to everything.
Ops Room PartnershipEric - Tech Operator
Nate - Psychologist
We have a lot of attention on Eric Beale and his work in this episode. Even he is also stressed out in this episode working on the mission objective, so much that even Nate psychoanalyzes him and Eric doesn’t even realize that. We are informed that Eric is a surfer and uses a lot of surfer lingo that others cannot much understand. He dresses in beach-casuals. But that is just him and his looks. But his work shows him as him being the best at his work. He is a Hacker himself and he works against the rogue hackers in his job. He helps Kensi get on with guest lecturing the superior hackers, and he also hacks into Joel Hardy’s laptop to know whereabouts of the rogue Drone.

He explains two NCIS technologies that they use vastly - The FacialRecognition software search and the Kaleidoscope Search which is a visual search that scans live feeds from traffic cams through inputting of search parameters.

Nate psychoanyalizes that Eric is a person who would keep pressing the elevator button just so that it would come down faster. It is the moment when Nate observes Eric being totally edgy with impatience at the kaleidoscope search not giving him fast results.

And finally we have Nate, who gives his psychoanalytical profiling inputs over Briggs, Kaleem, Joel Hardy to reach to Jansen as being the culprit. He also tries to take care of nervous edginess of all his colleagues by talking to them. He does with Kensi, Dom and Eric, tries to do it with Sam and fails.
Others/GK
The Thing
The Thing is introduced through Joel Hardy character when he says “I got a Thing”. And Dave Kalstein took it to even Season 5. :)

5x09 Recovery

Keeks or Densi Ship sails. The episode will be best remembered for Densi Dinner outing that creates a nagging opportunity for Kensi to ask Deeks to accept what they feel for each other in total maturity of mind and not in any spontaneous heat of the moment passion and yet how that happens for them is another spontaneous moment in their lives that is just as lovely as them. Kensi would never have thought Deeks can ask her out in those words, "I don't wanna be here with you right now. I wanna be at my place right now. With you". But that is what exactly how they are to each other. She needs to be in control of the direction the ship sails in and so Deeks calls her into his Wheelhouse to steer the ship along with him or if she wants take it over completely, then she could; as he wouldn't mind it at all; she is still in his ship. Who would have thought Hetty was meaning this earlier in the episode, when Gil Grant made her say..."something more in your natural wheelhouse" !!!

In this story, Gil Grant is actually relay writing episode from Joseph C Wilson's Fallout. Its as if Joey Wilson passed on his baton to Gil Grant for Densi story. Deeks is exactly in the same mood as we last see him in Fallout. Relaxed and more and more immersed into Kensi. The same shoulder touching closeness while walking or standing and pushing through shoulders continues with Deeks in this episode too. End of the episode, it becomes obvious that it is quiet noticeable to others. What comes across is that Deeks is more and more engaging himself with Kensi in physical manner and Kensi does not mind it at all. It is clear to him that she is not minding his increasing liberties he is taking with regards to the personal space defined between them as partners and it is getting blurred somewhere. Deeks is crossing the line and Kensi is allowing him to do. I was surprised to me that Deeks had his sharp senses around working of the case, but was finding himself wierd about his own jokes. Definitely he was not his normal self and I have to say, Gil Grant actually gave us a Deeks totally lost to love, a state of his which could only lead to silly but romantic moves from his side.

As part of the Trilogy of Densi or Keeks ship sailing, this Episode going into the next one is like Alanis Morisette’s “Ironic”. Its the same reference thrown in by Kensi’s response to Deek’s “ironic” comment in Big Brother Episode, two episodes before Joseph C Wilson's Fallout. In Big Brother, Kensi says is blame it on Alanis Morisette. :) We wait for this much time for the ship to sail, only to be hit by a storm the moment it sails. That is going to be in our next episode The Frozen Lake by Dave Kalstein. We can just hope that it is not set to become Titanic. :D

If any reader is randomly wondering what is the trilogy reference. It is me making the reference. Fallout episode is about Densi banter becoming an actual flirtation and interested involvement in each other before all the others (everyone seeing that), Recovery can be called as Dating Phase and Frozen Lake is where officially Deeks and Kensi call themselves as Boyfriend and Girlfriend.

Episode5x09 - Recovery
Keeks ship sails. The episode will be best remembered for Densi Dinner outing that creates a nagging plus opportunity for Kensi and Deeks to accept what they feel for each other in total maturity of mind and not in any spontaneous heat of the moment passion and yet how that happens for them is another spontaneous moment in their lives.
Though other than the official Keeks and Densi ship sailing, about which I am happy even if the ship hits rough weather and water, I am baffled by the case itself. Mission: What are we recovering? Actually it is a Naval Officers admission into a rehab for recovery treatment from Oxycodin addiction that leads to his death.
WriterGil GrantGil Grant is famous for his writing on interpersonal relationships. Upholding his style we have a very good episode of again character developments within the same procedural format, with all the relationship being shed some light. It was lovely to watch everyone get concerned over their partner or team-member’s interests.

In this story, Gil Grant is actually playing a relay writing from Joseph C Wilson's Fallout. Its as if Joey Wilson passed on his baton to Gil Grant for Densi story. Deeks is exactly in the same mood as we last see him in Fallout. Relaxed and more and more immersed into Kensi. What comes out is that Deeks is more and more engaging himself with Kensi in physical manner and Kensi does not mind it at all. Seems surprising to me that he had his sharp senses around working of the case, otherwise Gil Grant has given us a Deeks totally lost to love which could only lead to silly but romantic moves from his side.

Episode SummaryInvestigation of a Navy Officer’s death leads to Domestic Extremists against Afghanistan and Pakistan trying to take control of a Military Drone to strike a target in Pakistan.Story - A dead man found in a pool in Tranquility Villa, a rehab center opens the case for NCIS LA Ops team. The dead man is a Navy personnel. And preliminary investigation through Sam-Callen and Kensi-Deeks field visit yield information on someone tampering GPS logs of the outsider friend of the Navy man, so that he can get framed for the man’s cause of death, security footage cleverly kept clean away from cameras, except for a girl running away. So mission is to find this girl and what’s going on in the rehab. Kensi and Deeks go undercover as Nutritionist and Sex Addict. Kensi’s job is to get all inside trashed security footage and Deeks job is to get the name of the girl’s whereabouts and why is she being chased. Its successful mission enough and we get info on the miscreants involved in the Navy man’s murder. Its a domestic extremist group that is planning to drop missiles in Pakistan using US military drones. Now that part of it, the intelligence from the Navy man going for execution was too far-fetched. Question is...did the woman just get lucky that the Navy man get checked into the rehab and she planned all that activity impromptu. Is she that smart ? Unbelievable. There is that unnecessary piece of Muslim connection Faziz * with the Rehab Facility Owner that thankfully goes nowhere, except the fact that Homeland Agency is already keeping an eye on that man.
Increasingly the cases involved with domestic treason all baffle me. Its not international but national subjects and their motives behind their actions, spilling everything onto international arena. Impact left us nowhere. The case is still unsolved. Omni, Unwritten Rule, Big Brother, Livelong Day - all perpetrators are from domestic territory and have mercenary intentions. Only Fallout had Russian involvement Cold-war style. And this one Recovery - with Drones being controlled and targets such as Pakistan....what was the message to all from that woman ? No motive seen unless she was seriously deranged fanatic for a lost cause and love for launching missiles. And yes, absolutely true that she worked single-handedly after the murder to have her gear in position to launch the missile and also during day-time do her job. Damn! she was SO FAST. Faster than Ellie Bishop - the newly introduced NSA Agent from yesterday's NCIS Episode.
NCIS Personnel HighlightsIts about Tattoo and who can and cannot be a Tat guy. Its also about Deeks and Kensi being together together. Not much except that none of the team members think that Callen can be a Tattoo person. And Deeks and Kensi actually say the same thing to Callen in unison. Eric has an E=MC2 Tattoo. It was looking cool.
Ops Manager/sHetty Lange Hetty takes care of her two favourites. Callen and Deeks. Read below. She is so vested in them. One thing was funny though. When Kensi tries to tell in roundabout manner that she wants to be the nutritionist, Hetty, as usual being soft and respectful towards the girls, grants Kensi’s wishes by accepting her viewpoint as humour made her see Deeks in the wrong manner. She says, “Forgive my sense of humour Miss Blye…”

It just shows how Hetty sees the girls games to wrestle their men’s position and Hetty fully supporting them. Hetty always supports the girls but when it comes to her having fun, she always has it at the expense of the boys, especially through being a tease to Callen, Deeks and Eric. in this episode it is Callen and Deeks. She disallows Callen to have his fun and she takes huge pleasure in making Deeks a sex addict when all he wants to be is a drug addict.
Bull Pen Partnership -1Callen and Sam
(Scallen-Bromance)
Callen - What should he go for ? Tattoos ? Cars ? or Body Piercing ?!!!! :D Ain’t it ironic that nothing clicks for him ?!!
That was wonderful. Almost everyone can have Tattoos, but the same cannot be true for Callen as he is not a Tat guy. Even Hetty is against the idea of Callen getting a Tattoo. Usually she would want Callen to just be interested in something, but when it comes to Tattoo, no its not good enough for him. Sam, Deeks and Kensi are all again Callen having a Tattoo.

Well...off late Callen has been showing himself as outgoing ...his next door neighbour in Big Brother episode, now Tattoos, if not that then Body Piercing. Callen and cars...that was always there...his thing; even if Sam wouldn’t want to accept it. The Homeland’s undercover Agent defended Callen there. :)

Sam - He seemed to think he was successful in stopping Callen from getting a tattoo. No he wasn’t. Callen didn’t stop there. Now was that ironic ?!! that his staid partner is trying to get colorful and zingy ??? Hahaaaa :)

Sam and Callen - Action - As usual great and Sam is once again our saviour. He is on a roll from last three episodes. He saves a girl hanging from the roof and also he aborts a missile launch that is seconds away from target.
Bull Pen Partnership -2Kensi and Deeks
(Densi Romance)
Deeks and his two special women (Kensi and Hetty)

Kensi -Hetty naturally wants Deeks to be the nutritionist as he is the healthy-food freak. But Nope. Miss Kensi spills what he has been doing at 8’o Clock in the morning. The whole Burritos with Pop tarts with juice and a chewable. Basically it just shows that Deeks has not been telling her his schedule, Kensi was actually with him since the morning. So they spend a lot of time together when not on the case. And I would like to believe that Deeks is so head over heels with Kensi that in her company, he has just become like her eating all the junk food. :))) And Kensi gets the nutritionist’s part from Hetty.

Hetty - She wants Deeks to have his next natural act coming out of his “wheelhouse”. Now this was fun to watch. A wheelhouse ?!! Seriously?!!! That is what Deeks is wondering about and there we have Hetty clenching her hands and asserting to Deeks that he has indeed a wheelhouse. Hilarious !!!! Anyways, she convinces him to play the part of Sex addict instead of drug addict.

So what happened there. Those two women actually decided everything for Deeks and he was just going by their decisions. That scene between the three was a treat. The way these two women control Deeks and the way Deeks is happy for himself about them deciding for him, I just don’t have any words there. But the same emotion actually reminds me again of Alanis Morisette’s Ironic. Coz these two women will again decide something for him that will take away his happiness….perhaps for the best interests of all. Regardless, Deeks has let these women into him quite close. Now let me actually talk about the ironic moments.

And lastly the Keeks or Densi Ship; whichever way we and NCIS LA production Crew wants to call it, it has set sail. In that last minute when Deeks was breathing a sigh of relief, I was too. Kensi did not do anything to upset his applecart. Wasn’t that IRONIC ?!!! OMG!!! She actually got up to leave for his place to fulfil his wish and Deeks did not even have to ask.

The thing about their communication - the way Kensi feels that Deeks does not say anything what he means, she is frustrated about him not saying, asking or talking. For her that verbal communication is so important. Kensi does not empathize with Deeks Non-Verbal communication. But then its also a hard reality for Deeks that he cannot have any control on the roll-out of events with Kensi. She needs to be in absolute control of things happening to her. Then how is it ever gonna be anything smooth for Deeks where his heart needs him to do things the way he wants them to happen. So he just shuts down and plays along with Kensi and just keeping himself happy enough around her in way not to lose her. So what he never asked her for a date. He just wanted to be with her. In the morning, Breakfast became long with junk food - burritos leading to Pop tarts, leading to reminders of health food about orange juice and chewables…..and he still wants to spend time with her in the evening …. So out comes another Junk food item - Tacos. :)))) Then maybe he realized may be they need a better dinner. And all the time, he doesn’t want to do anything with food, he just wants to be with Kensi. And as her tirade starts, he just comes out flat with his honesty. Yes, he can risk losing her, but he cannot let himself be called a person who cannot communicate and upset her by driving her nuts. All he wants is, he wants everything working for both of them. And Thank God! Kensi did not BOLT.

I only had one word left on my lips, my mind for the rest of night. KENSI !!! I should just listen to Ironic song again. By the way Daniela Ruah loves Alanis Morisette.

Eric Christian’s Colsen white T - the neckline wow!! that stitch -something totally new. Did you notice ? The design of the neck weave and cut is different.
Ops Room PartnershipEric and Nell
(Neric ?)
Neric or Eric and Nell.

It seems the writers are now focussing on this ship and seem to be assessing if it can be set to sail. Isn’t that the reason why we soon will have another Intelligence Analyst in the team per spoilers. The way Eric calls Nell cute was lovely treat.

Nell: Why would you assume my tattoo is something cute and sweet?
Eric: I don’t know, because you are.
Others/GKJermaine StewartFound out that he is an 80’s gay singer who dies of AIDS. And that song with Clothes on was an instant hit in those days.

In crew's terms this is known as 508-105

The Production Crew has different numbers than what later became the air sequence. Season 4 Production Schedule had an extra episode shot which was telecasted as Unwritten Rule 5x05-101 in airing reality. This changed the sequence numbers for all the season 5 episodes either in terms of Season Episode number or actual episode number for show's grand total serial number. Recovery realistically became 5x09-105 for Viewers.
