Allegiance - Loyalty or the obligation of loyalty, as to a nation, sovereign, or cause. Fidelity. Ehsan’s allegiance to United States. The Guest character Ehsan was loveable. Enjoyed for the first time a Muslim character shown in NCIS LA, who is not a jehadi and yet respects his ancient traditions. Ehsan is shown proud of the ancient system "Hawala" that helps him send money to his mother and sisters back in Afghanistan. But, he also supports NCIS catching hold of people transferring money for terrorist causes. It's also Deeks Allegiance to NCIS OSP in LA. NCIS OSP’s allegiance to LAPD. Deeks allegiance to Big Boys of the Bull Pen-Callen and Sam. Hetty and Kensi are his family already, Kensi his home, its the bonding with Callen and Sam, in a mutually acknowledged manner that was missing previously. And, I cannot forget about it. There is that allegiance of "being in love" in the actions, reactions for Densi. Everything they are involved with in terms of work, circles them back to each other.
The TRIO - they have accepted each other!
Deeks feels at home with the Big Boys Callen and Sam. He does not talk back to their taunts and tease with his humour and instead takes it in younger brotherly way and answers back to them in endearing manner, expressing his hurt. No hiding away his emotions like previous times behind the mask of jokes. On the language learning challenge, to Sam's tease he says, "Remind me to talk about my inferiority complex with Nate". To Callen's tease he says, "You don't have to rub it in". Its shows that he is comfortable in owning up to what he looks up to in them, when seeing them. And he has started to accept their teasing of him as "expected" from his seniors.
Callen has started to tease Deeks as Sam has stopped teasing Deeks as much as he used to. The reasons are two: 1) Sam is making up for what he did before to Deeks with his condescending attitude towards him 2) Sam also understands the work place difficulties when one falls in love with his partner and he sees the emotional flux of Deeks and Kensi. Sam and Deeks partner up to find about the Hawala location in LA at the Afghan-Persian Rug Store. Deeks in his undercover character Sven actually teases Sam about his color and audacious Deeks gets away with his tease and we see a fuming Sam being in undercover but unable to do anything!! :)
Whether it was coincidental or the need of the hour, Callen was able to command Deeks to deliver the same that he can expect of Sam, the taking down of the suicide bombers on the count of 3 at the same time so that he can shoot the suicide bombers. It needed skill and trusting between the three to have their timing work for the success of the mission. And Deeks doesn't disappoint Callen and Sam ! Previously too Deeks has worked with Sam and Callen; mostly on Frank Military's stories like Deliverance, The Job as his stories are serious enough to need the team's dedicated involvement.
In summary, we see the partnership of Callen, Sam and Deeks working very well. Infact “Three is not a crowd” and Deeks does not feel as the "Third Wheel". Callen was staking outside the store while Sam and Deeks partnered to get info about the Rug Store and about it being a Hawala Market Place. He was kept on being used for his undercover acting skills. Deeks is skilled enough to work with the other two senior agents, I don’t get it why they have to treat him as third wheel all the other times in all other episodes.
Highlights of the Partnership:

Highlights of the Partnership:
- Callen was the Sniper of the team.
- Deeks was the Undercover person of the team - speaking Danish and acting the Gay.
- Sam was the bomb defuser in 30 seconds. Again!!! Really??
- Contrast shown through the joking and teasing when Deeks used to have inferiority complex but used to hide it behind his humour mask, now treats the same issues openly and says it aloud before Big Brothers Callen and Sam. He doesn't hide his emotions before them. Deeks now feels comfortable with Callen and Sam even though is not an Agent and is just an LAPD Detective working in liaison capacity.
Frank Military always makes his characters look great at work, no non-sense style. So Military reminded us and NCIS once again that Marty Deeks is LAPD’s Liaison Officer and yet does everything he can to keep showing his allegiance. Like learning a foreign language not just for the sake of learning to show-off, but to learn that language that is not covered by any of his other team members, to augment his team's skill-sets. Seems this was the other writer Andrew Bartels idea. Well! Deeks started to learn Danish and Sam already knew it. The last episode of Military wrote was,4x24-Descent and 5x1-Ascension when Sam hated it that he got Deeks for his partner and realized that he made a mistake in assessing Deek's character. This time Sam treats Deeks well for his partner, the Danish undercover"Sven" and also the “same-time” taking down of the suicide bombers as asked by Callen. They both were working at Callen's command without any disgrunt or misgiving. Military this time, by making jokes on Deeks through his care-taker Hetty and his indifferent Team Lead Callen, showed that Sam was not indulging in slighting Deeks in any manner. A contrast and development shown from what happened in Descent and Ascension respectively. He really was not in the least having any kind of frustration with Deeks in the Rug Store Ops, though Deeks did try to tease Sam with his "Color" joke.
Probably it was Andrew Bartels' idea on bringing together all Eric Christian's traits for Deeks. ECO is of Scandinavian Descent, blogs a lot through Instagram and loves his dogs. And Deeks; likewise in this episode tries to learn Danish, plays "Sven" undercover character with "fantastique" and "ze" and also is posting selfies and Monty's pics with glasses on.
The Love Story- What is "being in love" like?

The Love Story- What is "being in love" like?
Like the Hawala Transfer of Money to keep "anonymity" of the transaction, Deeks and Kensi seem to have figured out sending coded messages in the form of pictures posting to Instagram. Deeks is posting Monty pics to Instagram so that Kensi can feel at home. Its like they cannot talk to each other over their phones, but they have their anonymity through posting it on open blog that anyone can visit on the web and see it. But its a personalized message with meaning understood only by the recipient. Hetty has been keeping a close watch on Deeks and warns him not to post his selfies and his pics with Monty...but Deeks has been successful in making it look like his silly and frivolous acts... or Hetty underplayed it that she knows to allow Deeks to certain extent and not overuse the liberty to message a selfie exposing himself on the web. As an agent, Deeks cannot expose himself to the outside world. But Densi seem to care less about the risk involved or rules they are breaking, have resorted to text each other when they are overwhelmed with loving thoughts about the other. They both send their "Selfie" pics over to each other. Can this get them into risk in future ? Frank Military is writing Episode 518 where probably Densi will be in danger.
"Where is Kensi?" "Where is Deeks?" The anticipation, the trepidation, the disappointment as expressed by Densi when prepare themselves to see each other and miss it, one can feel the state of being in love for them. Its a different realm for them. Each could not see the other. Purposefully by the writers or otherwise. Whatever the reason was, we were able to see and feel their overwhelming emotions for each other and what they do about it. They feel the need to connect to the other and they break the rule and send each other selfies over a medium they should not have used to connect to each other. Such is their compelling need to be with each other.
How Densi were so conscious about how they look...hahaha! and yet when they could not, they sufficed themselves with just their pictures. Callen was closely observing Deeks and Kensi. While Sam left them alone, knowing very well what might they be feeling. He has been there with Michelle! :) Granger, least interested in how Kensi looks for a team briefing and greatly bothered why Kensi would worry about her "helmet-hair" when she is supposed to show her presence without any ado….enjoyable scene. It was also lovely to see Deeks and Ahsaan Navid bonding with each other like silly lover-boys and yet serious to show their gentleman image in front of the girls they adore. And last but not the least, Hetty was taking care of Deeks again, reprimanding him to keep up his character to being a gentleman at all times, now that Kensi is in his life and not be an indulgent teen boy oogling at women or having fun using sex-references. Would we see any change in him? ! Let's see.
Now about what I did not like in the episode as it is not reasonable to me. There is a lot of playing with words and lot of making fun of Deeks by Callen and with his lack of knowledge of languages. Deeks talking of "koala" of New Zealand, the marsupial animal; when they are talking about Hawala is quite going too far. Deeks as the law graduate and now working on FINCEN case will know the kinds of money transactions happen. Its ridiculous to say that a Detective and Part Agent like Deeks does not know what is a Hawala transaction, when I know the same and am not investigating any criminals. Was Deeks down-playing himself, or is this the writer's way of "reserved Comedy Strip" from Deeks ?!!!
Its fine that writers want to tease actor Eric Christian Olsen about what he quotes on his Instagram posts, but it only adds confusion for Deeks the character sometimes, especially when he is not in undercover. If you follow ericcolsen.tumblr.com; you would know what I am talking about. The Handlebar Moustache reference in 5x06-Big Brother and 5x13-Koala Bear reference, both came from ECO's Instagram posts over his blog.

Andrew Bartels - this is his first time as story writer capacity. Previously he worked as Writers Assistant for the NCIS LA Writers. I would need to see him independently to see his prowess.

Don’t know much about EL. Have to rewatch to catch the nuances.
Set for Planet D's Fund Raiser Art Exhibition, the photos were DP Victor Hammers and Chad Murray's Brother-in-law. Got to know from a twitter message from Executive Producer John Peter Kousakis @jpkouz 14 Jan -@bartelsand that art show is showing off the photos of @chadwmurray bro-in-law and our DP, Victor Hammer! #NCISLA" |
Episode Summary
|
A man seen taking pictures of a man and woman coming out of an Afghan and Persian Rugs store, is later killed through an explosive as he is trying to transfer pictures taken from his camera to his laptop. Before he contacts anyone, a man comes, plants the bomb and leaves. The case is handed over to NCIS by the LAPD. Deeks receives the call and gives the case to NCIS.
|
The dead man is identified to be the FINCEN Agent Stuart Greene. He is tracking Hawala Money transfers from Los Angeles to Afghanistan for Taliban accounts. The case’s affiliation calls for Granger and Kensi’s joint Ops with NCIS LA. They track down Hawala Money Transfers happening from LA Afghan and Persian store run by a man and his son, who in the past helped US Army in Afghanistan and hence have been able to get Visas and come to the United States. Ehsan, the son is proud of the Ancient Money Transfer system of Hawala and yet he is loyal to United States and owes his allegiance to the country. The story is essentially about him and his loyalty to the cause of USA to fight terrorism. The character of Ehsan is actually lovely to watch. A bubbly, candid person he is, who takes to dance easily and befriends everyone. Instantaneously he wins everyone’s heart. I particularly loved watching him. And once again like Frozen Heart’s Thapa, the Gorkha, Ehsan partners with Deeks, the human face of the NCIS LA Team, to help NCIS identify the Taliban bombers who are trying to take down a Public place where Muslim immigrants are attending the Naturalization ceremony.

NCIS Personnel Highlights and Bull Pen Fun
|
Its the time of learning new languages for Deeks. He is trying to learn a foreign language that none of the four of Callen, Sam, Kensi and Hetty know. Like Sam says...Augmenting teams Skills sets. Allegiance to Big Boys of Bull Pen!
|
Deeks for the first time, has taken up to do something that Hetty has not advised him to do as his boss and yet it speaks of Deeks showing responsibility all by himself to equip the team with what they want. Basically Deeks is showing Allegiance to NCIS LA Team. People are teasing him like in the old ways with Callen calling him lazing for liasoning, Hetty calling him schizophrenic and he himself talking about his inferiority complexes. Underneath all that joking, we see Deeks allegiance to the team.
|
Ops Manager
|
Hetty Lange
Hetty cultivating Deeks habits. Seems she wants the gentleman out of Deeks and not just his dirty, freaky and geeky image. She shows him its not funny just thinking dirty with his sexual references now that he has Kensi as his possible better half. Very intelligently Hetty puts across this thought for the day to Deeks mind by reminding him about Schizophrenia that Kensi once said Deeks was with Max Gentry character. |
Hetty as the Ops Manager. Nothing much on mission side except for arranging undercover dresses for Deeks and Ehsan. Reminds us of the Old Hetty in Season 1 when she used to look like the seamstress, dress-maker with the needle in the hand. She is like us taken with Ehsan’s transparent and warm character and asks Deeks to keep him safe. Likewise, we again see Hetty taking care of Deeks, like her errant kid, asking him to watch his tongue with those excessive sexual references and asking him stop sending his “selfie” pictures to his Instagram Blog. May be Hetty is grooming Deeks to be the gentleman that Kensi deserves; to the hilt, but the errant boy though heeding to his “little mother’ [Deeks called Hetty ‘Little Mother’ in 3x02 episode] is actually being smart. He is posting his Selfie pics to Instagram so that Kensi can see his pics on her phone.
The writers repeated that Deeks joke about Hetty's coming on the screen. Its quite interesting that Deeks is most scared of Hetty's sudden appearances that he sees her in his night-mares too and Hetty keeps enjoying herself by making sudden appearances or coming from behind that Deeks freaks out. Its been regular since 3x02 when he called her Little Mother and yet...he is so easily able to reach out to her. She scolds him and he listens to without any protests and yet he never feels any tension as Hetty keeps up with his sense of humour with her. About the excellent Dress-making skills Hetty has to support the backstopping for undercover, Executive Producer J P Kousakis was saying this on Twitter, "@jpkouz 14 Jan -Deeks is pretty sneaky sending selfie's to Kensi. Wesam looks sharp in that suit. Herty knows how to dress her men #NCISLA" |
Bull Pen Partnership
|
G Callen & Sam Hanna & Marty Deeks.
Later, Nell was in the field at the fundraiser at Planet D to backstop the last minute attendance of Callen, Deeks and Ehsan. Sam is in the Ops room at that time.. |
The case is transferred by LAPD to NCIS. So as Liaison Officer for LAPD, Callen and Sam; without any dispute or argument take him along with them. So this time it is Callen and Sam owing their Allegiance to “LAPD and NCIS LA Office”. We see the partnership of three working very well. Infact “Three is not a crowd” and Deeks does not feel as the Third Wheel. For the first time, Callen was staking outside the store while Sam and Deeks partnered to get info about the Rug Store and about it being a Hawala Market Place. He was kept on being used for his undercover acting skills. Deeks is skilled enough to work with the other two senior agents, I don’t get it why they have to treat him as third wheel all the other times. Highlights of the Partnership:
|
Partnership -2
|
Marty Deeks and Ehsan
|
They were two good human beings showing their allegiance to team and mission. Two men in love, happy with their good looks of being Men in Suit, dressed to kill and impress their women...it was endearing to watch. Even Callen had to stop Deeks from both of them going too kiddish and adolescents busy looking at blonde and voluptuous women…. Hahaha!
|
Ops Room Partnership
|
Eric Beale- Tech Operator
Nell Jones - Intelligence Analyst
|
Intel and helping wherever they can. Identfying the Afghani Store, US-LA Target for explosion, arranging calls between Afghan and Los Angeles Locations for the Mission Ops...Later, Nell was in the field at the fundraiser at Planet D to backstop the last minute attendance of Callen, Deeks and Ehsan. Sam is in the Ops room at that time.

Afghan Story
|
Owen Granger and Kensi Blye
|
They were the Afghan end of the mission. If Stuart Green the FINCEN Agent in Los Angeles was being worked by LA office, Kensi and Granger tracked down his team partners in Kabul. With the Source of Money confirmed by the LA team and one of the Tuberculosis Hospital in Kabul as the recipient, Granger and Kensi take down that base and confiscate the C4 explosives, Cell Phones that are used as trigger bombs on US-Afghani Military Personnel targets.
This completes the White Ghost part of mission where the source supply of explosives is taken down by the task force in Afghanistan. Granger, in the last episode had already said that lot of Hawala money has moved in and it means something big in terms of action was going down.... |
Love Story
|
Densi - Deeks and Kensi
Messaging each other right under everybody's nose. Hetty, Team@BoatShed and Asking for each other, right under Granger, who clearly misses or doesn't get what's going on...May be he knows...but he just doesn't care. Callen the way he keeps looking at Deeks fidgeting or Kensi's disappointment... |
Like the Hawala system, Deeks and Kensi seem to have figured out sending coded messages in the form of pictures posting to Instagram.Deeks is posting Monty pics to Instagram so that Kensi can feel at home. Its like they cannot talk to each other over their phones, but they have their Hawala “ANONYMITY” through posting it an open blog that anyone can visit on the web and see it. The Misses - Where is Kensi? Where is Deeks? Each could not see the other. Purposefully by the writers or otherwise. How they were so conscious about how they look...hahaha! and yet when they could not, they sufficed themselves with just their pictures.
Callen was closely observing Deeks and Kensi. While Sam left them alone, knowing very well what might they be feeling. He is been there… :)
Granger, least interested in how Kensi looks for a team briefing and greatly bothered why Kensi would worry about her hair when she is supposed to show her presence without any ado….enjoyable scene; especially when he senses his bald head and says,"I wouldn't know". LOL!!!
And the way he acknowledges Deeks presence calling then Agents, Detectives and yet when Deeks ignores his greeting, and instead asks "Where is Kensi?", Granger remarks at him sarcastically, "Oh Its nice to see you too Detective" Hahaha! |
