War Crimes from 5x02 -Impact becomes War Cries in 5x14. Gemmill continues with D7 story arc, the story of Private Contractors hired by the US Army in War against Terror in Afghanistan, that he started in 5x02 Impact. D7 was responsible for the murder of Vice Admiral William Gardner and Journalist Jason Carter, who were working on writing the memoirs of the Admiral on War Crimes in Afghanistan. D7, having access to technology and might of trained people, wiped all the material that the Military Officer and the Journalist had written down for public review. That same story of wiping evidence continues even in this episode. D7 shut down its operations on the ground of restructuring (real one being NCIS's continuing investigation) and has opened a new company by name of Durandel Securities. It is killing all its ex-employees who are continuing with their psychotic behaviour over Los Angeles soil. If they are caught by the Enforcement Authorities, the secrets of D7’s work culture would have been out and hence those men are killed to keep their image clean.
Gemmill uses his own Episode to run for a lot of action on the parallel story arc of Afghanistan story that he has been writing throughout from EP510 to EP519. More than the D7 episode case, Granger and Kensi’s actions matter for the story. The entire episode is subtly about Granger and what kind of person he is and what Kensi is doing to follow Hetty’s command. Question that Gemmill invokes in our minds are: Why Granger deserves to be Asst Director Granger and what kind of a Agent is Granger. Granger suspects that Kensi’s classified mission is no longer a classified mission for NCIS LA Office of Special Projects and that everyone might be privy to Kensi’s doings. And that is his motive behind coming back to NCIS LA, to check on everybody. He nudges Hetty, Nell&Eric and finally he takes the offer of Deeks to serve as his partner for the case, just so that he can ascertain whether Kensi is in touch with any one of them. His suspicions are quite reasonable.
The episode is about one partner trying to find from his other partner what he or she is hiding from him/her. It applies for both Granger and Kensi. While Kensi actions are understood by us, we are not totally aware why Granger becomes suspicious about Hetty’s assignation of Kensi for White Ghost Mission. On fun and serious side it also applies for 4 pairs; Sam and Callen, Hetty and Granger, Deeks and Kensi, Nell and Eric.
The highlighted character of the episode for me is of course Granger. Now I get why Granger is Assistant Director of NCIS OSP and what kind of history Hetty and him had together while working for CIA. He can see what others are trying to hide for him and when suspicious, he is on the trail to find the mole before mission is compromised. Now I understand, why he keeps making his sudden visits. Always Man on a Mission. Like the rest of the team, I was also aghast at Granger’s ability to shoot the man at close range at his ear to make him talk. It speaks about how many dangerous missions he has been on while working for CIA on War on Terror Missions. Shooting at close range, is akin to Torture Techniques as part of Coercive Tactics to interrogate Terrorist Suspects. Its brutal and we know how the US President has the authority to use force if deemed necessary under the AUMF legislation, by the CIA Agent or other Govt Secret Agencies like NCIS, which do not exist for the common man to know. The team, especially Deeks, Eric and Nell might not have known Granger before and hence they joke, like they talk back in the episode, but now Deeks seeing Granger shoot the man at close range might think twice before making fun of Granger.
The other subtleties brought forth by Gemmill in this episode that are quite foreboding are:

The other subtleties brought forth by Gemmill in this episode that are quite foreboding are:
- Sam and Callen's partnership. To which level it is progressing. A caring friendship inching towards family kinship with Michelle equally caring about Callen.
- Nell and Eric's increasing chemistry
- Nell being developed as the Ninja why Hetty is so proud of her.
- Deeks and Kensi's Love story - Its time to be out in the open instead of Deeks trying to evade the intimacy that he has with Kensi. It is now becoming a question of "Did they or Did they not" about the night they spent together and what Kensi was going to talk about with Deeks, if they did not do what we all seem to think after being led to believe that it happened !
- Deeks kind nature contrasting Granger's CIA trained hardline methods. Where is all this leading Deeks to? Is he really fit for an Agent life? Can he accept such close range coercive tactics applied on human beings as part of his job? What happens to his humane trait, the trait that appeals us most about him.
- The War Crimes committed in the name of "War on Terror"...be it private contractors hiring psychotic killers or CIA Agents who were given authority by the Govt. to exercise all kinds of interrogation tactics, however inhuman they are.

5x14 - War Cries
|
Who is in the combat and what is the war-cry? It seems Gemmill is making his case against War Crimes in Afghanistan with reference to D7's private Contractors who may committed war crimes and the Coercive Techniques used by CIA Agents for questioning. His War-Cry against War Crimes. And not only that, Gemmill who is also writing the Afghanistan Story of White Ghost Mission, of catching an elusive man called White Ghost, who beheads Marines, seems to have called out his war-cry to begin action for his Afghanistan Story. Hence see a lot of action happening on Afghanistan front with Kensi, Granger, Sabatino and Booker, all set at same base, working together, but none trusting any of his team partners. Each man is for himself.

Episode Summary
|
D7’s story arc and parallel story arc of Afghanistan story is developed. More than the D7 episode case, Granger and Kensi’s actions matter for the story. Gemmill takes advantage of himself being the writer of the LA and Afghan story.
|
That same story of wiping evidence continues even in 5x14-War Cries. The episode starts with LAPD finding two bodies near a dumpster. The case is handed over to NCIS when identities is tracked to them working for D7 in the past. As they try to find why were they killed, the team gets to know about D7 shutting down its operations 6 weeks ago on the ground of restructuring and has opened a new company by name of Durandal Securities. When Callen and Sam try tracking the area where the bodies are found, they see that it is a red-light area where men can pick women. The sandal is traced to a woman called Elise in the store, who is in that business in the night. Elise helps the team trace back to the man who picked her up in the car, Robert Brown a D7 Employee. Sam and Callen make a visit to Robert Brown's Apt and see that he had two friends in Afghanistan and it was them who had tried to kill him and instead got killed themselves. Sam and Callen are able to take Robert to Boat Shed and they interrogate him. In parallel, Deeks and Granger nab a D7 Employee who had come to kill the 3rd man. However, the team gets to know from the D7 Employee, that Robert Brown actually is a psychotic and sexual pervert. He takes pleasure in raping and killing women. He had already killed three women in Afghanistan. As a proof of what the employee has been saying, we actually see Robert going after Nell for his wanton wishes. Nell saves herself through some martial art moves of self-defence when the psycho guy disarms her of her gun.
That was the reason for D7 coming after Robert Brown to kill him to wipe all the evidence of kind of contractors that D7 was hiring for their war services. If the men would have been left loose after D7 shut down, the continued psychotic behaviour over Los Angeles soil would definitely have caught the attention of LAPD Police and D7 war crime secrets would have been exposed. The incident with Nell becomes an advantage for NCIS, as Robert Brown can plead bargain by testifying against D7 and avoid his death penalty.
The Afghan Story, I have written below.

Afghan Story

Owen Granger and Kensi Blye
Booker, Sabatino
Nell - Eric
|
Granger suspects that Kensi’s classified mission is no longer a classified mission for NCIS LA Office of Special Projects and that everyone might be privy to Kensi’s doings. And that is his motive behind coming back to NCIS LA, to check on everybody. He nudges Hetty, Nell&Eric and finally he takes the offer of Deeks to serve as his partner for the case, just so that he can ascertain whether Kensi is in touch with Deeks. Each of them, gives a negative answer to Granger. Because, we know Kensi is touch with all of them. Hetty is her manager setting the Mission Agenda for her, Deeks and her keep in touch for obvious reasons and now Kensi is in touch with Nell and Eric to have Intel on her case.
On the other hand, Kensi, as asked by Hetty is trusting no one at her base camp. She starts with Sabatino, who was the partner to Sanders, who was the earlier Sniper for White Ghost mission and is now dead. Kensi is planting bugs for GPS location about Sabatino’s movements and is running her own surveillance through Drone technology. She solicits Nell’s help in gathering Sabatino’s background. Nell involves Eric and so now it is a team of three for Kensi including her and if we include Hetty, it would be four of them involved in this mission and all resolute in not letting Granger know anything about it. Sabatino, we see him working alone, refusing to take Kensi along with him. He is tracked by Kensi to be meeting up with Afghani locals. Eric, in danger of getting exposed, keeps the Drone away from sight and so they cannot see the faces of the men that Sabatino is meeting up with.
Booker is back at the base and Kensi prods him in friendly manner to find something more about Sabatino. Kensi is able to know from him that Sanders and Sabatino were thick buddies and after Sanders was killed, Sabatino is working alone. I personally believe that even Sabatino does not know anymore whom to trust, especially after he has seen two of his partners getting killed in the line of Duty, Schneider in Siderov Case and Sanders in White Ghost Case. The Afghanistan story became deeper in this episode.

NCIS Personnel Highlights and Bull Pen Fun
|
Sam and Michelle set up Callen for a date. Callen does like his date. Granger is back to Los Angeles to find out why Hetty chose Kensi Blye for his mission. Kensi solicits Nell and Eric’s help for her mission in Afghanistan. And Nell shows her prowess with martial arts.
|
The episode is about one partner trying to find from his other partner what he or she is hiding from him/her. It applies for both Granger and Kensi. While Kensi actions are understood by us, we are not totally aware why Granger became suspicious about Hetty’s assignation of Kensi for White Ghost Mission.

He can see what others are trying to hide for him and when suspicious, he is on the trail to find the mole before mission is compromised. Now I understand, why he keeps making his sudden visits. Always a Man on a Mission and like once Hetty said, he has forgotten to trust people after having worked in CIA for long on difficult classified missions.
Like the rest of the team, I was also aghast at Granger’s ability to shoot the man at close range at his ear to make him talk. My expression went like Deeks - jolted. It speaks about how many dangerous missions Granger has been on while working for CIA on "War on Terror" Missions. Shooting at close range, is akin to Torture Techniques as part of Coercive Tactics for interrogation of terrorist suspects. Its brutal and we know how the US President has the authority to use force if deemed necessary by the CIA Agent or other Govt Secret Agencies like NCIS, which do not exist for the common man to know. The team, especially Deeks, Eric and Nell might not have known Granger before and hence they joke, like they talk back in the episode, but now Deeks seeing Granger shoot the man at close range might think twice before making fun of Granger.

Ops Manager
|
Hetty Lange
|
Hetty is in observation and helping mood in today’s episode. She is seeing the consequences of sending away Kensi on White Ghost Classified Mission in Afghanistan. She is seeing how Deeks, every moment, is concerned about Kensi and how expectant he is of her return as he sees Granger, the pangs of separation. Likewise Hetty also sees, how her launching of Kensi in Granger’s team is actually causing Granger to suspect that Hetty might have ulterior motive in sending Kensi. Hetty sees that Granger is suspecting her intentions and thinks that whatever Kensi is doing at Afghanistan is at the bidding of Hetty and that Kensi might be in touch with the rest of the team.
Highlight of the episode is the way, Hetty lovingly looks at Nell when she is back from Boatshed and visit to Doctor with her stitches. She is very proud of Nell and embraces her. Very Motherly! Again...And she does not forget her other favourite Callen. She dresses him up to be the perfect gentleman for his date. Hahaha! Hetty as always proud of her girls, protective of her boys and dressing them to be the perfect gentlemen.
|
Bull Pen Partnership
|
G Callen & Sam Hanna
|
Its more about the setting up Callen for a dinner date and that too a blind date. Sam and Michelle do that for Callen. But I have to say, Callen and the girl seemed to gel with each other with complete ease and candidness about the whole thing! I wonder what Callen would have to say to Sam the next morning at NCIS OSP. It was nice knowing that Callen fears Michelle as much as Sam. Hahaha!!! That speaks something of the kinship that Callen feels for Sam's family. Anyways, the bromance as always is pleasure to watch.
|
Partnership -2
|
Marty Deeks and Owen Granger
|
What is the connecting point for Granger and Deeks? CIA Agent turned NCIS Asst Director for LA OSP and LAPD, Liaison Officer for NCIS...they have nothing in common. But as they study each other in brushing past each other, they both realize they have a connecting point, Kensi Blye. She was a partner to Deeks and now is the partner of Granger. The concern expressed by Deeks to Granger for leaving behind Kensi is noted by Granger. And just like Deeks believes he would be able to wean information from Granger about Kensi, so does Granger hopes about the same from Deeks. But unfortunately, as expected by us both men do not speak more than is necessary about their partner Kensi.
On the lighter, humourous side, we do see Granger and Deeks working together calmly with all the slights about each other but mutually accepting in all manliness. [man to man] [Not really] [Not really] was funny and yet very honest answers to each's curiosity and question. I liked especially Granger’s comment for Deeks about him in Afghanistan as a national lampoon vacation. [Deeks nothing personal, but you in Afghanistan would be like national lampoon vacation movie]
And though Deeks has his small revenge back on Granger when he purposefully shows up late to backup Granger at the apartment after seeing Granger kneel down before the D7 guy, he later is disturbed at Granger’s close range shooting at the man’s ear. Granger is nearly the bad guy, just that D7 is proven at War Crimes and Granger is on the side of Govt who is allowed to use these techniques. I have to see, if Deeks really wants this kind of Agents job. Especially when as the LAPD officer, he is always kind to people on the street or the weak who need help. Even in today’s episode, he shows his kindness to the girl at the store and gives a cover up story for the girl to her store manager when he comes to take her to Boat Shed. Once Deeks becomes an Agent, would he be able to show his humane side?

Ops Room Partnership

Eric Beale- Tech Operator
Nell Jones - Intelligence Analyst
|
In this episode, Nell and Eric become part of Kensi’s mission by providing her help through Intel and Surveillance. Kensi sends encrypted messages to Nell asking for information on Sabatino. And Nell decides to help Kensi realizing what kind of dangerous mission Kensi is on when she reads about Sander’s execution by the White Ghost. Nell shares her concern for Kensi's life with Eric and both of them becomes partners to Kensi. (Read the Afghan story).
There are two highlights in this section.
1) Neric - They looked cute together. I felt a great improvement in Neric chemistry even if there was largely a friendship shown there. Something about the two was sweet.
2) Nell, the Little Ninja - Nell lives up to her Ninja name. She tackles a psycho all alone. She is not afraid to use her knife on the man when she is disarmed of her gun. Dave Kalstein taught actor Renee Smith for this action scene. There was a lot of hype for this action scene. Read the twitter messages below. :) The entire team is proud of her. Callen, Sam, Deeks, Granger, Eric and Hetty. Nell looked cute when she was looking at Hetty and she hugged her. Nell was cute when she asked Callen to confirm if she got him[Robert Brown]. Nell was also cute in Deeks sweater that looked big on her. She was a brave girl for everyone, good girl for Hetty and Big Stones Jones for Deeks. And she gets back to Eric, Neric and with Kensi. :) |
Love Story
|
Densi - Deeks and Kensi
|
Nothing direct between Deeks and Kensi this episode. It is all suggestive. Kensi calls herself as Sunshine for a pseudonym when she sends an encrypted message to Nell to gather Intel on Sabatino. Remember Deeks two favorite things - Sunshine and Gunpowder. That is Kensi for him.
Deeks is all forgetful of his manners with Granger and only concerned queries about Kensi. And like he previously offered Hetty that he can go back to LAPD if he was the cause of Kensi’s sending away, this time he offers himself to Granger to take him instead of Kensi.
Although Deeks keeps negating the intimacy he has with Kensi, when talking to Hetty or his team members or in today’s episode with Granger, I believe, now the writers are bringing the noose on him to confess what he truly has with Kensi from an intimate relationship perspective. Next episode, Nate is showing up and he is going to partner Deeks. I have a strong hunch that Nate may ask Deeks to speak about his feelings for Kensi openly and not just in his head (like he asked him to clear in his head, in his previous session). And this will lead to the subsequent Joe Sachs Episode where Deeks might need to get vocal about his relationship with Kensi.

In crew's terms this is known as 513-110
The Production Crew has different numbers than what later became the air sequence. Season 4 Production Schedule had an extra episode shot which was telecasted as Unwritten Rule 5x05-101 in airing reality. This changed the sequence numbers for all the season 5 episodes either in terms of Season Episode number or actual episode number for show's grand total serial number. War Cries realistically becomes 514-110 for Viewers.
