Its one the best episode from the team of RS Gemmill-Sara Servi and Jonathan Frakes. Impact - There is a line that Nate Getz throws in to explain what’s going on with Deeks. “May be something about this had more Impact.” That line is applicable to the episode plot. Its about Impact of What Happened. Impact of the trauma on Sam, Deeks about the torture that Siderov put them through in their last case, Impact of the Government hiring Private Contractors for War on Terror. There’s more to come and get resolved.
The Obvious Impact is on Sam and his perception about Deeks, Deeks and his questioning about his vested interest with NCIS work and what would make him tick and finally the Densi relationship. However, there is also an incursion made into Eric Beale and Nell Jones which could have a future. Eric not only is discomfited by the full length trousers that Hetty gets him to wear to get groomed into culture that befits his work place, he is also showing his skills as to how much of the D7 Company "Voodoo" Skills impress his hacker personality. With no clue left on the crime site, within the debris or possible places of the victims, it is left for Eric to recover evidence of D7 being behind the sabotage and crash of the plane. And as for Nell, her outgoing personality comes out with the number of return messages she gets when goes out on a triple date with Kensi and Rose. And there is that long standing "Neric" Ship, which writers have not made up their mind whether to start shipping or not, but we see here in Gemmills story, a certain amount of backstopping to build a curve to that story arc for future.

For Sam, it is the Cumulative Impact of being on life-threatening missions several times as a Navy Seal and as an Agent. Inspite of his training to let it go, to deal with it and having a solid support system around him, he worries about him losing it one day.
For Deeks, its the Cumulative Impact of a Third Wheel Status. Like Nate Getz says, "He's hurting. He can come to work. Whether or not its up to him to decide." His hurt stems from the cumulative impact of psychological conflict between the Third Wheel Status made official by his partner when one does need to act in the capacity of the Paired Wheel for the completion of mission goals for the given assignment. That's Kensi's outburst for being assigned randomly to partner with Callen, a repeat of deja vu that she had felt in Season One. But it is something that Deeks gets to feel everyday, if it were not for Hetty and Kensi's need of him at the OSP. Yes, it is the Cumulative impact of being criticized, ridiculed, being made to look like the third wheel and finally being tortured for backing up the same condemning partner about his suspect character and abilities. This what comes out from Impact.
Deeks makes his personal assessment of his situation quite comprehensively. He got abducted because he was trying to save his partner Sam. He had to back him. He told so his Ops manager in 4x24-Descent. He got tortured because his partner Sam's undercover was blown up and was being tortured to give up on his wife's undercover status. He had to keep the cover intact even if Sam did not trust him or felt his character had no honour. Again to back his partner. So much for trying to be a partner when he was merely a Third Wheel all along to Sam. This is the unresolved angst for Deeks. The theme of being "Not Wanted" by anyone. Hence his easy acceptance of himself feeling that he is "halfway to being homeless". The other unresolved angst is his relationship with Kensi. Kensi herself doesn't talk or say anything and yet she bull-dozes Deeks into saying something about their relationship. Kensi has terrible communication per Deeks. Deeks has poor communication per Kensi. This leaves them without anything to communicate and yet there is so much to be felt, said and acknowledged. They are two frustrated souls, helpless , driving each other mad, Kensi leading Deeks to kiss her and yet, there is so much angst left to be resolved. Its the same conflict between being unofficial and an actual couple.
I noted that Gemmill in this story seems to apologizing to character Deeks when he makes him share his thoughts about what he feels when people make jokes on him being “shaggy-like” or treated as “schizophrenic” because of his tendency to talk and ramble on and that he feels "he is halfway being to homeless". Gemmill had started calling Deeks a Shaggy boy and other writers taking a cue from him. That hair-style was very much part of the writers script and very much part of Deeks character for his undercover success, but it was also a pain-point for the Deeks the person he was and he had to gulp down being made butt of the joke. It was impregnated so deep into all the writers on board that it was becoming a pain-point to even the viewers and upset as to why people wouldn't stop or why Deeks wouldn't react.

It was a revelation in the present episode as to how Deeks actually has felt deeply all along inspite of him taking the sarcasm for his physical appearance and his characteristic traits in a sportive manner. No one could bully him, but people could make fun of him and that hurt him. Personally I had never liked the jokes and hence felt sad that Deeks has always taken those jokes about himself; from Sam and Kensi especially; rather stoically, but when he is at the weakest moment of his life with his traumatic state, those characteristic traits that he is made fun of has actually made him lose confidence on himself. The physical trauma that he underwent actually took away his mental resilience against the hurt inflicted by Kensi’s stabbing remarks on his character because of his undercover case with Monica in Episode 4x23-Parley and by Sam’s condemning remarks on his appearance and his style of doing things and having no trust on his abilities as Cop or part-Agent in Episode 4x24-Descent. Seems the prior emotional state of being negated as a man who doesn't mean anything when he talks and then made the Third Wheel for the Partnership, had hurt him more than anything, even his torture was bearable with him thinking about what he loved most, but not being actually cared by anyone, his partner or colleagues.
Infact it was Gemmill indeed from Episode 4x17-Wanted, where he started securing Deeks with Kensi, who wanted him to be alive for his sake in all situations. The NCIS OSP was his home because of Hetty's trust on him and his abilities. It was also a place of his emotional liking because of his close relationship with Kensi. But a drift between partners removes the security for Deeks in his mind. Though he does keep himself alive thinking about Kensi, and doing the right thing by himself, sustaining Siderov's torture, emotional distance with Kensi is what ails Deeks mentally. So much that he is unable to come out of his trauma mode because Kensi never spoke to him after he kissed her in 4x24-Descent and even after he bared his emotional state to her in 5x01-Ascension. And naturally through Hetty's push about him to see that he is "Wanted" at OSP, if not for anything, atleast for Kensi and when Kensi shows up at his door, his trauma takes backseat and he falls asleep. Its "home" again sitting besides Kensi and "bantering about anything" with Kensi, its no more rambling or feeling schizophrenic. Its the cozy feeling of being "wanted" even if it is to watch a bore movie by Kensi's request and naturally he ruffles his hair on his head giving himself the shaggy look again. Kensi wants him just as he is. "Its a Love Story" for him when he asks himself what does he have with Kensi. Its a beautiful ending to the cumulative Impact what started in Parley.
I have not read the screenplay by Sara Servi and RS Gemmill, so I cannot tell if Director Jonathan Frakes did justice to what they wrote in the story or he added emotion to what was written further through the Art Direction, Photography, Editing and Scenic location. Sara Servi has been with the NCIS LA scribe since Season One. No wonder she understand Deeks and entire NCIS LA story as it should be. RS Gemmill is the backstopper, and it is obvious that he knows what he is doing. Jonathan Frakes has always given us beautiful episodes with his sense of sensitive direction. The art direction, the scenic locations are all apt treatments of the state of the mind.
A story arc of possible War Crimes resulting through unbecoming and untrained military conduct from Private contractors hired by the Government is planted. It can be let alone for a while, but definitely can be picked up at other times.
Its a Love Story - as blessed by Hetty
Hetty has always been the Spokesperson for the writers. Hetty’s interest in Deeks and Kensi’s relationship is the highlight of the episode. It’s like Hetty gets the pulse of what’s ailing Deeks most, him being that close to Kensi that he is afraid to face her when he doesn’t feel great about himself. Deeks can recover from his trauma but he needs Kensi to be around him as his support system, a thing that Sam had in the form or Michelle and Callen, which Deeks missed with none being around him, not even Kensi.
It was a nice motherly touch when Hetty initially threw the carrot at Deeks that she might start thinking replacement partner for Kensi if Deeks doesn’t buckle up, get his act together and show up at work. Nice try Hetty! Deeks gives his attention and does try to walk out of his house to surf, clear his head.
I wonder how Hetty knew that Nate would assess Deeks thoughts on his relationship with Kensi. It was quite a prompting on Nate’s part to have Deeks open himself up about his feelings for Kensi. It seemed to work for Deeks as his spirits lift up, him feeling alive and instinctively protective about his relationship with Kensi.
Seems to me as the ending scenes with Hetty-Nate and Deeks-Kensi play out, I have a feeling that Hetty had a word with Kensi and she suggested to her that a visit to her partner may not be wrong after all and it might be worth making the effort to visit him.
Her remarkable quotes
To Deeks - She is very mother-like, concerned and reprimanding him in a way Deeks can understand.
“I am gonna need your decision soon, especially if she needs a replacement”
“I will leave you to your storm. Hopefully it will pass without much damage”
To Nate - She is the Manager on Mission. Get Nate to do what she wants him to do for Deeks. Take that extra step to know him and help him.
“I don't want him back if he is not the man he was.”
“So what's the good word on our Mr Deeks?”
To Sam - Respectful of the man Sam is!
“Carrots Mr.Hanna!! Always eat your carrots”
About Kensi and Deeks
“Too close to return”
Hetty seems to say it aloud in her thoughts- She needs you here! How can you not return?! Let me send her to you then !!! Haha!! that seemed Hetty's attitude.
Its Complicated - as sensed by Nate
Nate Getz, the OSP's psychologist. He always has been a wonderful character for NCIS LA. He has impressed me from introductory episode of Legend in Parent NCIS when he fixed Gibbs and Mace's relationship. Whatever the amount of knowledge he has, he is going to say as if "Its complicated" even if it is not. He made his easy relationship with Rose complicated and here too calls Deeks and Kensi's relationship as Complicated. Its amusing how he gets corrected by Hetty saying that all relationships are complicated. Whatever it is, but Nate has an impeccable understanding of what's going on in people's minds and he takes cues from everyone around him and makes his assessment. It was lovely to have Nate back in the episode.

Writer

Sara Servi
R Scott Gemmill
|
Sara Servi is writing the story for NCIS LA for the first time in the capacity of Writer. Previously she worked for NCIS LA as Writer’s production Assistant for Matt Pyken and Tim Clemente in Season One for their stories ‘Keeping it Real’ and ‘Blood Brothers’ respectively. I loved Matt Pyken’s work back then. Seems Sara Servi is finally promoted to being full time writer. And I have to say, she did a good job with R S Gemmill.
R S Gemmill is one of the master backstoppers for NCIS LA stories. He has previously worked on JAG series, through which NCIS spin off came and which now gives us NCIS LA. He gives us action packed procedural drama involving Navy professions in the crime dramas. In this story, Gemmill created a backstopping for the story arc on Private Companies like D7 who may have been involved in war crimes in the name of War on Terror in Afghanistan. Although D7 has taken all steps to keep itself clean by wiping all evidence away, the investigation from NCIS team continues and it might surface in season’s future episodes.

Director

Jonathan Frakes
|
I am liking Jonathan Frakes direction. Whatever I see on the screen throughout the episode, it seems flowing, fitting and sensitive.
The best scenes for me were all the scenes with Deeks,Nate and Hetty. Deeks and Hetty’s scene with “storm sounds - clenching and releasing exercises”, then Deeks and Nate’s scene at the beach, Nate and Hetty’s scenes and Deeks and Kensi’s scenes. They are quietly stoic and emotional. We feel the depth of the emotion and yet respect the characters and stand apart from them letting them go stoically about it.
The scenic location and setting of Deeks-Hetty, Deeks-Nate and Deeks-Kensi scene was involving to watch for.
Have to specially mention the Darry Levine for Deeks costumes and Set Decoration of Deeks room. We get to have a Peep into Deeks home with all those wall paintings.
Editing by Eric Wilson - I loved the construct. Especially the one where he fast forwards the clouds over Los Angeles skyline to show passage of time.

Set Decoration

Deeks Apartment
|
Wow! we have seen Deek’s apartment for the first time. House walls are covered with paintings, that I cannot categorize per my knowledge. But they are definitely modern paintings. We can see his LA growing up habits - skating and surfing.

Episode Summary
|
A private Jet Flight from Washington DC into Burbank Airport, fails to respond to Tower Radio and crashes while landing killing the crew and passengers on board.
|
The story through investigation is about Vice Admiral William Gardner and his Ghost Writer Jason Carter getting killed in the air crash of the private jet flight they had taken to fly to come to Los Angeles. Admiral William Gardner was writing his memoirs on War on Terror in Afghanistan. His views about the War were not in the same line as Government or Navy and therefore had been forced to retire early before his time. He started writing and Jason Carter, a renowed Journalist, recommended for Pulitzer prize for his work; was his Ghost Writer.
The NCIS LA team investigates the case and finds through the minimal evidence they can find on the crash site, that the jet flight was sabotaged, caused to crash as part of conspiracy to stop the Admiral expose War Crimes committed in War Crimes. Jason Carter’s digital recorder holds Admiral’s recount on the Government hiring of Private contractors resulting in possible war-crimes. Having no choice, NCIS LA make use of the only evidence they find through the digital recording, broadcast news and solicit help from Jason Carter’s girl-friend Julie Ward and nab the two employees of D7.
D7 is a private company supplying support services in high spots around the world; with couple of billon in Government contracts; hiring skilled men with IT Skills and Special Forces; had high level access to technology that could intercept air traffic control and sabotage private jet's computer in flight. They had diligently planned to crash the private jet, steal the black-box right under rescue, recovery teams on the site after the crash. They torched Jason Carter’s house leaving nothing to be recovered and likewise wiped out everything from his virtual Cloud storage.

NCIS Personnel Highlights
|
The episode is about the impact on the NCIS LA team on account of Siderov’s torturing of Sam and Deeks.
Its also an episode about partners caring for their other partners, like Nell about Eric, Kensi about Deeks and Callen about Sam.
And finally “It’s a Love Story”
|
An effort at continuity maintained by the writer post the Ascension Episode. The episode speaks of aftermath and each of team member’s adjustment to changed dynamics at the OSP office. As Ops Manager Hetty is worried, as partners Callen and Kensi are worried. And yet, the work goes on uninterrupted at the OSP office, working with the resources they have at hand.
OSP Psychologist Nate Getz visits OSP at Hetty’s behest to assess Sam and Deeks psychological fitness to get back to work.
On the lighter side, it is also about trying to make Eric wear full length pants and Girls going on triple date. And it is only be
On the serious side we learn about the support systems that Sam has through Michelle and Callen and how Deeks does not have anyone to go through his traumatic experience. And Hetty lits up the “Love Story” for Deeks to find his support system in Kensi.

Ops Manager
|
Hetty Lange
|
Hetty does what she is best at. Taking care of her team. Right from providing Eric Beale “full length trousers” to possibly sending Kensi off to Deeks’ place to get him to his safe place and sleep. Its not shown on the screen, but it’s just so obvious that Hetty may have done everything motivating the worried partners to do their best to get their hurting partners back into game.
Hetty calls Nate Getz to review Sam’s and Deeks psychological conditions. She has more faith in Nate than regular other counsellers especially as Nate can be a friend to a hurting Sam and Deeks who would rather talk to a trusted other friend than their regular partners with whom they are close and yet unable to open up about their fears of losing it.
Hetty also personally makes a visit to see Deeks condition by herself, just like she had been watching Sam through her eyes before having Nate to speak to them. She’s very matron like in the entire episode. Hetty makes Nate go and find Deeks at the beach when she tries to find status by calling Nate at the boatshed who is waiting for Deeks to turn up any moment.
Best Scenes of the Episode are ones with Hetty and with Deeks. And here are Hetty scenes.

Bull-Pen Partnerships

Callen-Kensi
Callen-Sam
Callen-Kensi-Sam

Deeks is not coming to work. Sam is being assessed by Nate. The pairs being broken, Kensi has to partner with Callen. Later once Sam is deemed fit to work, Kensi tags along with Sam and Callen to solve the case.
Kensi dislikes it so much for her looking the unpaired person, available person when Hetty asks her to work with Callen that she says it aloud,”Third Wheel status made official”. And when Sam returns, she asks him if he wants his partner back so that she can step out. We feel how Kensi sorely misses Deeks at his table in the Bull-pen.

Ops Partnership
|
Eric & Nell
|
There is also an incursion made into Eric Beale and Nell Jones which could have a future. And there is that long standing "Neric" Ship, which writers have not made up their mind whether to start shipping or not, but we see here in Gemmills story, a certain amount of backstopping to build a curve to that story arc for future.
The caring-sharing between the two was great as usual. Eric is forced to wear full length pants by Hetty. Seeing his discomfort, Nell is the only one who relieves Eric of his discomfort by cutting the trousers off to knee length.
When Hetty is upset that surveillance camera fit into a Garden Gnome is called by the team as Hetty Cam, as reported by Eric, Nell protects Eric from Hetty’s wrath.
Nell is high on the triple date response that she gets from two boys. Previous night, Nell had taken Kensi along with Rose on a triple date. And we see only Nell getting response from two dates. When sharing the event experience with Eric, we hear Eric expressing the same sentiments as Kensi about going on triple date. Its a “3 times heart-ache.”

Torture Impact
|
Sam - Callen
Deeks - Kensi
|
Callen tries his best to have Sam get back to his normal state after his traumatic experience from previous episodes. He buys tickets to Lakers Game and which Sam does not even make an effort to go and see. For him the trouble is that his loved ones are too caring about him. He understands what he has gone through and has reconciled himself with it and had rebounced from the experience through “letting it go”. He is shown boxing, with him passing his physical and psych evaluations. After having talked to Nate, he feels better and is inducted full time into work.
Deeks on the other hand relapses into PTSD with Insomnia hitting him hard. He is shown listening to Storm Sounds, keeping his room dark and trying to sleep on his couch when Hetty gives him a surprise visit. He starts declining calls from Hetty and Kensi. Hetty sees 43 missed calls on his phone when she checks it if its working. He has not even got up to open his door to see Kensi’s cronuts that she ordered from NY. After Hetty gives her carrot and stick warning that he needs to make a decision about his rejoining work if he doesn’t want her looking for his replacement to be Kensi’s partner, Deeks gets up to go to Surf to clear his head. Nate makes an appearance on the beach and Deeks is able to talk to him. He is worried about him not being able to sleep, his inability to resolve the traumatic experience when he had other traumatic experiences since his childhood. As he talks, we see his usual cheery self gone, him expressing his deeply felt angst about him being called Shaggy and Schizophrenic. His words are, “I get the Shaggy jokes”, “half way to homeless”, “walk around with the mind of schizophrenic”. I felt his sadness so much. Nate welcomes his opening up and advises him that it is actually good that Deeks is worried about his slow recovery. To help Deeks sleep on with good thoughts, Nate suggests Deeks think on his special relationship with Kensi.

Love Story
|
Deeks-Kensi
|
“What about Kensi ? How do you describe your partnership with Kensi ? You have a special relationship with Kensi like Callen and Sam have. What is that ingredient that makes it unique about your partnership and different from all others ?”
Those are the questions and prompts that Nate Getz posts to Deeks. Deeks gets defensive and protective about his feelings for Kensi and he does not disclose anything to Nate. Its like Deeks, of all things, he is worried about, he is most worried about his relationship with Kensi and would do anything to guard his feelings get exposed and protect his relationship with Kensi.
Nate reports the same to Hetty. “He's hurting. He CAN return to work. Whether he will or not, it is for Deeks to make the decision.” He needs to sleep so he can get rest and resolve his trauma. About his relationship with Kensi, Nate reports to Hetty that “Its complicated.” “He's very close to Kensi.” Hetty understands and completes his thoughts, “Too close to return”.
I have a strong feeling here, though it is not shown on the screen; that Hetty might have suggested Kensi to visit Deeks. Else how could Kensi not go and visit Deeks earlier and how she decides to visit right on the day when Hetty and Nate made a visit. Its clear that Kensi is worried about Deeks, unhappy that he is not coming to work, making her upset and itchy with everything and has been making visits until Deeks door, but never actually knocked the door until the day of the episode. Its as if Hetty gave her a warm talk and asked her to knock Deek’s closed door to let her in. Standing there is just not enough.
The ending scene between Deeks and Kensi was eventful in the sense of giving us the punchline of Season 5 “Its a Love Story.” Beautiful music playing around, nervous Deeks at receiving Kensi into his home, Deeks finding his banter with Kensi, Deeks falling into sleep as Kensi chatters on about “Burnt Offering” movie and finally Deeks subconscious making a bold statement about his relationship with Kensi… it was nice follow-up to Hetty and Nate’s scene.
The quotabe quote from Deeks was the description about Cronut. “Its like America made slow and sweet love to France and made a pastry baby.”

Nate - Psychologist
|
I have throughout explained how Nate Getz matters to the episode. For me all Nate’s scenes with Hetty, Sam and Deeks were the best. I particularly loved his ending scenes with Deeks and Hetty.
And we cannot forget Rose. Last time when Nate came, it was in 4x12-Paper Soldiers. Rose and Nate has split up.
This time, we are informed through Nell that Rose is still single and rarely goes out and hence Nell took her out on a triple date along with Kensi….two uninterested girls with Nell.

In crew's terms this is known as 502-99
The Production Crew has different numbers than what later became the air sequence. Season 4 Production Schedule had an extra episode shot as 4x97 which was telecasted as Unwritten Rule 5x05-101 in airing reality. This changed the sequence numbers for all the season 5 episodes either in terms of Season Episode number or actual episode number for show's grand total serial number.
