D7 Story Arc

In 5x02-Impact, R S Gemmill created a backstopping for the story arc on Private Companies like D7 who may have been involved in war crimes in the name of War on Terror in Afghanistan. A private Jet Flight from Washington DC into Burbank Airport, fails to respond to Tower Radio and crashes while landing killing the crew and passengers on board. Vice Admiral William Gardner and his Ghost Writer Jason Carter are killed in the air crash of the private jet flight they had taken to fly to come to Los Angeles. Admiral William Gardner was writing his memoirs on War on Terror in Afghanistan. His views about the War were not in the same line as Government or Navy and therefore had been forced to retire early before his time. He started writing and Jason Carter, a renowed Journalist, recommended for Pulitzer prize for his work; was his Ghost Writer.

The NCIS LA team investigates the case and finds through the minimal evidence they can find on the crash site, that the jet flight was sabotaged, caused to crash as part of conspiracy to stop the Admiral expose War Crimes committed in Afghanistan. Jason Carter’s digital recorder holds Admiral’s recount on the Government hiring of Private contractors that resulted in possible war-crimes. Having no choice, NCIS LA make use of the only evidence they find through the digital recording, broadcast news and solicit help from Jason Carter’s girl-friend Julie Ward and nab the two employees of D7.

It is found that D7 is a private company supplying support services in high spots around the world; with couple of billon in Government contracts; hiring skilled men with IT Skills and Special Forces; had high level access to technology that could intercept air traffic control and sabotage private jet's computer in flight. They had diligently planned to crash the private jet, steal the black-box right under rescue, recovery teams on the site after the crash. They torched Jason Carter’s house leaving nothing to be recovered and likewise wiped out everything from his virtual Cloud storage. Although D7 has taken all steps to keep itself clean by wiping all evidence away, NCIS team feels their involvement is enough to send a signal to D7 and like companies to get their act together and which would surely surface in future. It meant for us viewers that D7 story would continue in season’s future episodes.

That same story of wiping evidence continues even in 5x14-War Cries. The episode starts with LAPD finding two bodies near a dumpster. The case is handed over to NCIS when identities is tracked to them working for D7 in the past. As they try to find why were they killed, the team gets to know about D7 shutting down its operations on the ground of *** and has opened a new company by name of D** Securities. When Callen and Sam try tracking the area where the bodies are found, they see that it is a red-light area where men can pick women. A discarded sandal with blood spot on it is traced to a woman in the store, who used to be in that business. But none of the women the team questions are able to help the team about anything. But the house occupied by the men gives away the information that there is a third man whose life too might be endangered. Sam and Callen are able to take that man into protective custody and bring him to Boat Shed and they interrogate him. In parallel, Deeks and Granger nab a D7 Employee who had come to kill the 3rd man. However, the team gets to know from the D7 Employee, that Robert *** actually is a psychotic and sexual pervert. He takes pleasure in raping and killing women. He had already killed three women. As a proof of what the employee has been saying, we actually see Robert going after Nell for his wanton wishes in the Boat Shed when she is all alone. Nell saves herself through some martial art moves of self-defense when the psycho guy disarms her of her gun.

That was the reason for D7 coming after these men and killing them off to wipe all the evidence of kind of contractors that D7 was hiring for their war services. If the men would have been left loose after D7 shut down, the continued psychotic behaviour over Los Angeles soil would definitely have caught the attention of LAPD Police and D7 war crime secrets would have been exposed.

We also get to see Granger's professional character in the episode with the way he handles interrogation of the nabbed D7 employee in the Apt. As the man asks for a lawyer, Granger loosing all the patience and showing no mercy at all, shoots the man near his ear, probably damaging his ear permanently.

The story is not over yet ...
