5x20 Windfall

Gil Grant's Episode. Sparks of Wit fly around like Fairy Dust to charming effect! Lovely!!!!

Highlights of the Episode
  1. Kensi is back. A complacent and self-pitying Kensi, nonchalantly walks into work with no competitive spirit of hers. She beats herself up for being beaten, tied to chains along with her ex-fiance.
  2. Nell is competitive challenging Kensi to buckle up her spirits and give her fair share of appreciation. She seems to give a choice to Kensi to choose between Field or Ops Room, because Nell can beat her at both places.
  3. Eric misses Nell in Ops, more so because Kensi has not been cooperative and helping.
  4. Deeks misses Kensi, but respects Nell for his partner. He keeps teaching her tactics the same way he has been helping her.
  5. Kensi wants to be back. She finds her feet and asks her boss to allow her to do her regular job.
  6. Deeks waits for Kensi. Reminds her that they have not chatted for long and he is getting worried that Nell is going to fall in love with him (if Kensi does not acknowledge him soon enough).
  7. And there comes the Punch. There SHE IS. Here I AM

Episode
5x20 - Windfall
Sudden Unexpected Fortune..The case is about 42 Million Dollars laundered away
Vendetta in Windfall. Perfect Storm
Writer
Gil Grant

Gil Grant the Consulting Producer for the show and has been regular writer for parent show NCIS. He has been with NCIS LA from Season One. I know him as creating dynamics interpersonally between all characters that adds to the organic growth in the form of muscle to the skeleton as provided by R S Gemmill for the same characters. Gil Grant stories are always interesting episodes in terms of solving the crime procedural as it keeps our Field Agents and Ops Room personnel busy and engaged at the subtle levels of intrigues dipped in witticism and humour. Gil Grant specializes in adding undercurrents between characters that keeps them engaged in a certain mentally hitting way through an intellectual manuvering of repressed emotions by giving an opportunity to vocalize it into expression of the same with a certain body language that leaves it mark. As for the crime procedural, Grant’s favourite subjects are War in Iraq, Alqueda and Mercenaries.

Tonight’s episode is full of witticism. Its replete with playing with words for all characters. I shall be explaining below, which words we have to look out for to catch the subtleties.  As for the undercurrents for plot developments into continuation for story, in tonight’s episode, Gil Grant; by making Nell join Deeks, successfully wedges into Neeks(Nell and Deeks friendship cum partnership) and Nelsi (Nell and Kensi’s friendship), making Nell feel on the edge with both Deeks while on field and Kensi when in Ops Room. She is uneasy at being the third wheel for Deeks and helpless about taking Kensi’s place. She feels she usurped Kensi’s place, but all of it just adds to the fact that Densi realize that they have to be at their best, delivering their best, not compromising the mission in any manner, otherwise there are promising agents like Nell waiting to do their jobs more successfully than them, and it would be just their loss to be losing to her. This whole thing has a desirable effect on Kensi, who does seem eager to be on the field than being complacent due to her personal trauma faced in Afghanistan at losing the mission’s focus by getting caught and captured and also losing her Ex-Fiance. Job first followed by other feelings is the motto of the episode and it seems to nurse Kensi back to what we know her as.

And finally Grant ends his episodes in trademark style of leaving something for the next episode to follow on. The beauty of Grant’s episodes are that, they need to be watched slowly, in an understanding and unexcited manner and then we keep seeing all the nuances through the dialogues and body language.

Episode Summary
Areeb Sahar and Mazhar Tariq, Alqueda sympathiers nab Adrian Davis while he comes out of a hotel and demand the whereabouts of the money. The entire episode is about “Where is the stolen Money?” that is a windfall of weath and has now become a vendetta to get it back.
Adrian Davis, a former Marine in Iraq, became a private Contractor, set up a Security Company Monarca Securities with  his partner Gabriel Stanfill. Like some of the ‘reputable” contractors, Davis was found guilty of embezzled a million of dollars from the Restoration Funds destined for Iraq, of which the Governments are still trying to account for missing 6.5 Billion. Davis was imprisoned for 7 years in prison by the DOJ. While he spent his time in prison Stanfill set up a Wholesale Wine Distributership. The investigations lead to Alberto Jiminez  from Cautelo Cartel  links to Alqueda, which employs Cautelo Cartel muscle; to find the money from Davis and Stanfill. While Stanfill gets killed, Davis helps the NCIS Agents to find the money before Alqueda men find it.
NCIS Personnel Highlights and Bull Pen Fun
Kensi is back. [And we are all smiling.] Everyone is happy.
Granger is back.
And yet Nell partners Deeks.
When it is a Gil Grant episode, not even one line can be missed by us. Every line speaks of something about the character. The Bull pen, Ops Room and Hetty’s office discussions are all about Kensi being back and if she is really feeling good to be sent on to the field or she is just looking good. It was hard to tell how Kensi was doing actually and if she was ready for work, except that she was not happy for not being assigned to do her regular job.
Ops Manager/s
OPs Manager Hetty Lange
Asst Director Owen Granger
It was funny to watch the Hetty-Granger banter fighting like old married couple about whose call it was to take the “house” decisions, how Hetty is good Human lie detector owing to an incredible experience of having worked along with Granger, arguing pro and con about sending Kensi onto the field inspite of the discrediting history of trauma faced in Afghanistan alongside another disturbing history of Deeks and Kensi being more than partners.
To be specific, Hetty asks Kensi to stay back and work with Eric Beale in OPs room until she is ready for Field work. Granger informs us that the precedent for Hetty to take this step is her past experience with Agent Mansfield who after having been sent to Field post his Sarajevo Debacle, cost his partner’s life. And on Granger’s usefulness towards the case, he helps the team con the Alqueda men by providing the heaps of counterfeit money. In the end they are shown to be working on the same lines though they behave like a warring but very much married couple…
Partnership 1-
G Callen & Sam Hanna
(later joined by Deeks and Nell)
It was funny to watch Scallen being followed everywhere by Neeks. Neeks lands up at Davis’ house, then Stanfill’s house, then Foster’s house, then the Warehouse….
There was nothing significant reveal for Scallen except that Sam worked as Sommelier for one year in Undercover and that he is afraid of Clowns. Sam's Sommelier Cover Story is the back-stopping mention for him in passing in EP 2x02-BlackWidow by DaveKalstein. Their comments for Kensi and Eric were funny. “Like Armadillo in Texas gets along under the truck on a Freeway”. Likewise the talk with Harold with Warehouse Manager was funny the way Callen probes him. “Time Sensitive Offer” from Sam was funny.
Where was the 42 Million Booty? It was “Hidden in Plain Sight”. Go watch the episode to find it.
Partnership -2
Marty Deeks - LAPD Liaison Officer
Nell Jones - Intelligence Analyst

In the beginning Deeks is unhappy that he could not be with Kensi. He is unable to hide his emotions and keeps to himself with distractions like looking at wine bottles when in field with Nell. It is Nell who breaks the ice and informs Deeks, that he she did not want to be a Third Wheel. Deeks recovers from that moment and becomes responsive and attentive to Nell, effectively becoming Neeks.
“Wanna take notes…”
As usual, he keeps teaching Nell with tricks about their field work, like in the present case of how to keep the informant network alive and ticking. The informants are called “See-Eyes”. The funny thing is Nell uses her learning on Deeks-the teacher at the end of episode with her “Control” and “Respect” comebacks to Deeks. Deeks has to applaud her saying “Well Played”...something he said in the beginning of their partnership in 5x12-Merry Evasion. In this episode, Deeks also informs Nell about Sam and Callen like in 5x12 Merry Evasion, he was talking about Kensi with Nell.
Hair Styles - Deeks as discussing with the Informant. Voluminous rise in Mad Hike versus Deeks flat Hair of Style by Pillow fashion…
Nell knows Spanish. She spoke Spanish.
Ops Room  Partnership
Eric Beale- Tech Operator
Kensi Blye -Special Agent
(briefly joined by Nell Jones)

A totally non-performing work partnership it is. The way I see it is that its not that Kensi cannot help Eric in a small manner. After all, she was able to assist him in Season One. Its that both Eric and Kensi, after having worked with different partners who complete them, chose not to work with each other. Kensi is not motivated enough to take enterprise until ordered by Eric or Eric is not motivated enough to delegate work to Kensi until she asks for it.
Its like Eric misses Nell for how much she shares his Intel gathering work. And to be fair for the first time, I saw, how much Eric and Nell actually keep applying their inductive and deductive methods at gathering Intel. They know to dig for clues within given virtual datasets.

On the other hand, Kensi is bored sitting in Ops room. Unlike Eric, Kensi does not miss working with Deeks but starts taking it personally that she has been punished to sit in Ops Room with Eric for her failed mission in Afghanistan. She cannot appreciate the fact that how much the Special Agents depend on the Intel gathering work of Eric and Nell until they actually show to her how she could have helped them with their work and how could she have appreciated what they do. It needs a skill to do what they do and least Kensi could have done was to learn like Nell keeps learning the tips provided by Deeks. When Nell briefly joins her and Eric in OPs room, Kensi looks are territorial though behaving indifferent, Nell asks for permission to join Beale, where she completely impresses Kensi by making her see what Eric has been looking for in Kensi as partner.

But before that happens, Nell actually also tells Kensi, that she would love to become an Agent, but she would never like it to happen at the expense of another ones unhappiness about the progress she is making. Kensi gets the hint.

On the side, as Hetty observes an exhausted Eric, taking his coffee, she tries to find out his assessment of Kensi in the OPs room. Eric admits to Hetty that Kensi is bored but emotionally is rock-solid. [My perception to that was that Kensi hardly shows anyone any emotions except for Deeks. Its only him who can understand her silences and “I am good”]
Love Story
Densi - Deeks and Kensi

Kensi is back. But like Nell says and hits right home to everyone....sometimes we wait for long time enough to get what we want, but when we get it, it is not exactly the same as we expected it to be, as we wanted it to be. And that applies to Deeks, Kensi, us and everyone. Kensi is back, but the Kensi that has returned home is not the same as the one we were knowing about her. Then how does everyone receive Kensi? How does Deeks receive her? And most important of all how does Kensi respond to everyone? How does everyone respond to Deeks?

The entire body language about Deeks is to reflect how far he is stretching himself to be get into Kensi’s proximity, which he somehow is being blocked by circumstances to make her inaccessible to him. He is at her desk, setting her things, buying her coffee, but none of these gestures touch Kensi into anything except her blocking him out totally. At the end of the episode, while the rest of the team is having fun at Sam’s Desk, Deeks while participating in their talk is also leaning against the divider besides Kensi’s Desk, while waiting for Kensi to come down...because if she does come down and does come back to her desk, he can catch a few moments with her. Such is his desire to be with her, such is his longing to be with her. When she does come back, Deeks takes his chance and talks to her, that they have not have had a talk for a long time. Of course this is a hint that, this is what is going to happen in coming episodes. But the other interesting thing to happen for him after a long time, is Kensi reacting to his joke that is nothing but a way of speaking the truth. “I was worried, because I am sure Nell was falling in love with me”. Its actually him saying, “I was worried about you not wanting to talk to me. I was thinking you had fallen in love with me, but may be that is not the case anymore”. Kensi can respond to him comfortably in a language she knows and which Deeks can understand. The Punch. “There she is”. “Here I am”

Deeks waited for 5 months for Kensi to be back. And he complainingly asks Hetty to give him back his partner. It takes a loving boss to take Deeks demand kindly. Otherwise, Deeks tone to Hetty was almost rebellious, when he asked, “I wanted my partner back”; just like it was in 5x03-Omni when he says,”Ask me tomorrow” when she asked him if he was back. Shows his losing his edge, trying to find a meaning, why would Hetty not trust Kensi with him?! Is he not capable of taking care of Kensi?! more than anyone?! that seems to be his questioning as against Hetty’s administrative and qualified judgement call to detain Kensi from going on field without making her feel responsible enough on how serious she has to be while at work now.

As for Kensi, after watching Nell and Eric make her feel totally incapable as them, her spirit just kicks in honestly to be humble enough to approach her boss and ask her to allow her to get back to “Agent-ing”.  It was a big step for Kensi. Like in 5x02-Impact, Deeks came back to form at the carrot stick of Hetty having to find his replacement for Kensi’s partner, Kensi in tonight’s episode, feels the jolt of not being able to work with Deeks and that too someone who replaced her in a better way on the field and in the Ops Room where she was assigned for the day.

Why this is important is because, Kensi has gone back to her shell and has grown comfortable in her inner pain by not reigning in her emotions. She also has stopped being responsive to Deeks as someone who loves her to infinity. But being left alone, with no partner, makes her kick herself alive. And then comes her possessive response about losing Deeks to someone else. The return and the punch.

What makes it interesting for the love story is that, Hetty after speaking to Eric, comes to an understanding that, Kensi if kept apart from Deeks, revelations would not happen about her emotional state as Kensi very easily seals (bottles) her emotions and rarely shows to anyone. The only person, close enough to break her walls has been Deeks.

In crew's terms this is known as 519-116
The Production Crew has different numbers than what later became the air sequence. Season 4 Production Schedule had an extra episode shot which was telecasted as Unwritten Rule 5x05-101 in airing reality. This changed the sequence numbers for all the season 5 episodes either in terms of Season Episode number or actual episode number for show's grand total serial number. Windfall realistically becomes 520-116 for Viewers.
